What Cigars Should You Smoke When Hunting?
First of all, you probably shouldn’t enjoy a cigar while hunting. Not only can the cigar be a dangerous distraction while handling a firearm, but the smoke it produces may also scare away the game. Similarly, shooting with smoke in your face is a pain, to say the least!
We agree that it’s still quite tempting. After all, a cigar between your teeth and a rifle in your hands feels pretty masculine. Nevertheless, its drawbacks do outweigh the benefits.
Generally speaking, the cigars are best enjoyed after the hunt. Sometimes this will outdoors following the shoot. On other occasions, you may retire to a lodge with the other huntsmen.
Although it varies according to the game and geographic area, hunting season tends to fall during the autumn and winter. Temperatures are usually cooler and sometimes quite cold.
Therefore, we generally recommend spicier gourmand cigars that will provide warmth rather than refreshing and bracing mild ones. These cigars tend to feature more ligero tobacco as well as wrappers derived from Mexican San Andrès or Ecuadorian Sumatra tobacco.
You can, of course, opt for something completely different. Our suggestions are primarily to give you some inspiration. Nevertheless, we’ve thought hard about the best choices to heighten your experience.
Similarly, most hunting cultures will usually enjoy a tipple after the hunt. Since it’s quite cold, the drink will also serve to warm you up. We’ve considered options that tend to pair well with drinks like mulled wine, cognac, and sloe gin.
Bespoke Unit also has a number of pairing guides from whisky to cognac. Consequently, consider checking those out as well so you can get the combination just right!
How Did We Rank These Cigars?
Each cigar featured in this guide has been either formally tested or fully-reviewed. Indeed, nothing here hasn’t been at least sampled in a professional setting.
Furthermore, each cigar was tested using the Bespoke Unit Cigar Formula, a quantifiable review matrix that we developed to create a systematic review method.
It first came live in our Avo Nicaragua review in August 2019. However, we have frequently revised it to ensure that it offers the most accurate scoring when we review cigars.
Consequently, you can be confident that the cigars listed here were carefully and thoughtfully curated rather than assembled by random.
