Saddleback Flight Bag On Luggage

Saddleback Leather Co. is an established legend in the everyday carry world.

The brand began in 2003 selling handmade bags directly on eBay, then grew fast on the back of classic designs and unapologetically tough construction.

I remember first writing for Bespoke Unit in 2013, fresh off my first pilot’s license, and staring at photos of these rugged briefcases. It has taken me until 2025 to live with one of their flagships long enough to write a proper review.

The model in question is the Flight Bag, a leather briefcase built around an old-school Gladstone frame that opens wide and stays open.

As a working aviator and resident leather nerd, I am exactly the kind of person this bag was made for.

With that being said, this review is cleared for takeoff!

Design and Materials

First impressions were exactly what one would expect from Saddleback.

Metal Buckles & Black Leather Details Of Flight Bag

Large stainless buckles, thick straps, and a clean matte finish on my black sample. It looks more traditional and tool-like than many sleek modern briefcases on Bespoke Unit, which is part of the charm.

I ordered black to keep it uniform-compliant, although the Dark Coffee color is the beauty of the lineup if your dress code allows.

Pigskin Lining and Full Grain Black Leather Details

Saddleback specifies full-grain leather with a pigskin lining, a combo that gives you a firm hand outside and a soft, almost indestructible interior. The unfinished edges make the lining easy to spot, and they suit the workhorse brief.

On my sample, the leather took on a subtle sheen after a few weeks as oils from my hands worked in, which is exactly what I wanted from a bag meant to be used hard.

Large Pocket On Back Of Saddleback Flight Briefcase

A note on tanning, since people ask. I find Saddleback’s hides behave like high-quality chrome-tanned leather in daily use. They shrug off water and require little babying compared to many veg-tanned bags.

Either way, the important point is durability and easy maintenance, which this bag absolutely delivers.

The Gladstone Mechanism

The Flight Bag’s defining feature is its Gladstone frame.

Pop the frame open and the mouth holds itself wide until you close it. There are no zippers to scratch hands or gear, and the little leather pull tabs make opening easy with gloves or cold fingers.

In the cockpit the frame is genuinely useful. I keep the bag next to my seat, reach over for a pen or coffee, and the mouth stays put until I shut it again. If you fly or work at a desk that doubles as a catch-all, this matters more than you think.

Using Saddleback Flight Bag Open In Cockpit

Water resistance remains the one open question with any frame opening such as this one. I live in the Pacific Northwest, so rain is a season unto itself.

So far the leather and lining have kept things dry in normal showers. If I ever attempt an (unlikely) water landing, we will revisit the topic.

Capacity and Organization

Inside, the Flight Bag keeps things simple and purposeful.

Flight Bag Interio Pigskin Lining Texture And Quality

The pigskin lining covers a main compartment with a full-length interior flap that holds my personal iPad and pens. A key strap hangs where it should, and the false bottom is the clever bit.

Key Hook Interior Of Flight Bag

The front panel and bottom are one piece of leather, which creates a hidden panel beneath the floor where you can tuck small valuables there.

Hiding Airtag In False Bottom Of Flight Bag

I keep an AirTag in that space, and I like that the doubled leather effectively thickens the interior base where a bag usually wears first.

On the front are two large bellows pockets. They swallow a passport wallet and my high-visibility vest when I am heading to the airport. Behind each pocket is a hidden pocket that fits a battery bank or paper flight tickets.

Hidden Pockets on Exterior of Flight Bag

On the back, a full-width exterior pocket takes my work iPad with flight plan and charts. The strap anchor back here uses three stout rivets, with a hint of brass showing on one head that looks quietly classy. These are small touches, but they are the touches you notice after week two, not just on day one.

Carry and Comfort

The shoulder strap is a double layer of the same leather with a padded shoulder piece. The pad sits flat and does not wander.

Water Resistant Leather Exterior Saddleback Flight Bag

Weight is 5.5 pounds empty, so this is not a featherweight brief, but it carries close to the body and the wide strap spreads the load. The Gladstone frame does not fight your stride, which makes airport laps and gate changes easier than I expected for a framed bag.

A real world note: While walking through an airport with the Flight Bag on my shoulder, a pilot from another airline stopped me and asked, “Is that a Saddleback?” That is the brand’s reputation showing up in the wild.

Saddleback Bag Gladstone Opening And Leather Pull Tabs

Their unofficial motto, “They’ll fight over it when you are dead,” pairs neatly with an official 100-year warranty. Between fielding compliments and knowing the company will stand behind the build, you feel like you bought the right kind of overbuilt.

Large Interior Bag Pocket Pigskin Leather Lining

Saddleback also points to stainless hardware and UV-resistant, marine-grade thread, details that line up with how the bag feels in hand and how it has behaved so far.

Drawbacks and Small Fixes

Two minor things are worth noting on this Flight Bag, though both fixable.

First, the strap runs very long. At my ideal setting the excess looks bulky and there is no keeper to tuck it under.

Saddleback Flight Bag on Tarmac with Roller Luggage

Second, there is no built-in trolley pass-through. Saddleback sells a separate luggage strap, although availability and matching leather may vary and it is not listed as Flight Bag-specific. My current four-wheel suitcase makes this a small issue.

If I were running a traditional two-wheel roller, I would want a tidy pass-through solution. A small leather keeper or a simple DIY strap loop would likely solve both issues at once.

Value and Warranty

At $649, the Flight Bag sits in the premium briefcase tier, and the proposition is straightforward.

Exterior Flight Bag in Daylight

You get full-grain leather, a Gladstone mechanism that truly works, serious hardware and thread, and a 100-year warranty that covers real use. The bag fits a 17-inch laptop, opens fully in a second, and organizes the essentials with a few smart hides like the false bottom and behind-pocket stashes.

Scratches On Leather From Use

If you want a lighter synthetic case, this is not it. If you want a long-term leather brief with personality, this is the one that earns its keep.

Final Verdict

From a pilot’s perspective, the Saddleback Leather Flight Bag is a home run. It is classy without being precious, it holds a surprising amount, and it asks for zero babying.

Demo Flight Bag On Shoulder Strap

Mine already shows the kind of honest wear that makes a leather briefcase feel personal, especially where it rests on the luggage handles. I am genuinely excited to see how it looks in ten years. With most gear I hope to age gracefully alongside it. In this case, I think the bag might age better than I will.
