A longstanding staple of Davidoff’s repertoire, this particular vitola merges the Special and Aniversario series to produce a quintessentially harmonious experience. Featuring a blend of rounded San Vicente Visus and sweet Olor Seco, the presence of Piloto Ligero offers a spicy contrast for greater balance.

Thanks to its accessible size and flavour profile, the Aniversario Special R is an ideal option for a luxurious yet contemplative morning smoke. That said, it’s one of the pricier options on this list. Therefore, it may be better suited as a special treat rather than a regular fixture in your routine.

"A Davidoff staple and yet with a more robust body than their Signature line, the Aniversario will delight even those who aren't typically fond of Davidoff Cigars."

A creamy blend offering aromatic notes as well as yeasty brioche, the Nub Connecticut has been a longtime favourite at Bespoke Unit. Despite its squat appearance, one of these can actually provide you with at least 50 minutes of smoke.

Furthermore, a box can be picked up for a song if you’re a shrewd buyer as they’re often on sale on several online retailers. As a result, they present themselves as an excellent daily smoke.

3. JC Newman Brick House Double Connecticut

If you prefer conventional vitolas, the JC Newman Brick House is an excellent alternative. We would actually argue that it offers a very similar albeit somewhat more refined experience to the Nub Connecticut with a few added aromatic notes.

In fact, one writer caused gasps at the BU office when he declared that he actually preferred the Brick House over the Nub! Conceived by Drew Newman, the Brick House is produced at the Nicaraguan PENSA factory under the watchful guidance of the talented Fausto Gutiérrez Altamirano.

4. Macanudo Gold Label

Crafted using Macanudo’s famed “capa especial”, it features a wrapper made only from 1st and 2nd primings of US Connecticut volado leaf. Overall, it has a delicate and refined flavour that is particularly enjoyable in the early morning to waken the senses.

Expect a tableau of aromatic herbs with its creamy opening, which mellows into a mineral and pine finish. We have a lot of affection for this blend and hope to see more of it in the future.

5. La Gloria Cubana Serie D N°5

La Gloria Cubana Serie D No5 Cigar First Third
  • Filler: Cuban Puro
  • Binder: Cuban Puro
  • Wrapper: Cuban Puro
  • Preferred Vitola:4 1/3 x 50 Petit Corona

An elegant Spanish exclusive from Cuba’s La Gloria Cubana, the Serie D N°5 offers a rich yet balanced experience. With notes that consist of roasted coffee beans, pine, and cinnamon, it’s a whirlwind of unctuous flavour.

So far, this is probably the richest cigar in this list. Indeed, the transition between thirds can occasionally come on as somewhat strong. However, it pairs beautifully with a morning coffee to kick-start the day.

6. Avo South America Syncro Ritmo

Avo Syncro Ritmo Cigar & Oranais Pastry
  • Filler: Nicaraguan, Peruvian, Brazilian, Honduran & Dominican Republic
  • Binder: Mexico
  • Wrapper: Ecuador
  • Assembly: OK Cigar Corp [Dominican Rep.]
  • Handmade: Yes
  • Body: Mild – Medium
  • Smoking Time: 80 Minutes

Made from tobacco from no less than seven different countries, the Ritmo is a testament to contemporary cigar blending. Each leaf offers something unique, which contributes to its intricate flavour profile.

With notes of citrus and grapefruit in the first third, the Ritmo develops notes of pecan, rye bread, and charred oak as it evolves. Although we reviewed the 30th Anniversary Edition, the regular blend is exactly the same save for the flashy packaging.

7. Camacho Connecticut

Camacho Connecticut Robusto Box Pressed & Espresso
  • Filler: Generoso, Aleman, & Broadleaf
  • Binder: Authentic Corojo
  • Wrapper: Ecuadorian Connecticut
  • Preferred Vitola: 5 x 50 BxP Robusto
  • Assembly: Diadema Cigars [Honduras]

This blend was introduced as part of Camacho’s Bold Everyday Smoke range only a few years ago but has reached a lot of media attention. Indeed, it was part of our regular rotation for quite a while before we sadly ran out!

Additionally, we have a general preference for the box-pressed variant, which also includes American broadleaf in the filler. For instance, it’s a much richer experience with additional herbaceous and creamy notes that are ideal for being enjoyed during the morning.

8. Padrón Dámaso

Padrón Dámaso Cigars In A Row
  • Filler: Nicaragua
  • Binder: Nicaragua
  • Wrapper: Connecticut
  • Preferred Vitola: No.15 6 x 52 Toro
  • Assembly: Tabacos Cubanica [Nicaragua]
  • Handmade: Yes
  • Body: Mild
  • Smoking Time: 70 Minutes

As you may have gathered by now, this list is dominated by Connecticut cigars. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Padrón’s celebrated 2015 release makes an appearance. This marked a changed in the company’s usual selection. Until then, Padrón had a reputation from stronger Nicaraguan blends.

As a Connecticut blend, it offers notes of citrus with elements of salt and roasted nuts without omitting the quintessentially creamy aromas that follow. However, it does have a little more body than the above entries, which some may find too overwhelming for the morning.

9. Perdomo Champagne

Perdomo Champagne 10 Year Anniversary Cigar
  • Filler: Cuban Seed Nicaraguan
  • Binder: Cuban Seed Nicaraguan
  • Wrapper: Connecticut
  • Preferred Vitola: 6 x 54 Toro
  • Assembly: Estelí, Nicaragua
  • Handmade: Yes
  • Body: Mild – Medium
  • Smoking Time: 60 Minutes
  • Pricing: $6.50 / Single [Shop On CigarPage]

Boasting a triple-fermented Connecticut wrapper, the Champagne has been released since the brand’s 10th Anniversary in 2008. An overall sweet smoke with notes of molasses and caramel, it’ll add a touch of spice to your morning routine.

However, you can add a touch of earth and evocatively rich liquorice, which may not be to everyone’s palate too early in the morning. Nevertheless, this a great cigar to enjoy before noon strikes.

10. Por Larrañaga Panatela

Por Larrañaga Panatela & Cappuccino
  • Filler: Vuelta Abajo, Cuba
  • Binder: Vuelta Abajo, Cuba
  • Wrapper: Vuelta Abajo, Cuba
  • Preferred Vitola: 5 x 36 Panatela
  • Assembly: La Corona [Havana, Cuba]
  • Handmade: Yes
  • Body: Mild
  • Smoking Time: 40 Minutes
  • Pricing: $3 / Single

If you’re looking for a cheap and cheerful yet enjoyable smoking experience, we’re avid fans of the Por Larrañaga Panatela. Made using both long and short filler, it’s a veritable Cuban Sandwich. Nevertheless, don’t let that deter you from giving it a try as you will be surprised by its rich bouquet of flavour.

While we have admittedly had the occasional plugged stick, it’s usually a well-crafted cigar. Furthermore, the value for money is astonishing and the panatela vitola offers an excellent short smoke to coincide with your daily routine.

What Makes A Cigar Ideal For The Morning?

JC Newman Brick House Cigar Box & Accessories

Firstly, in our series on the best cigars for different times of the day, we’ve defined the morning to start at 5am and to finish at noon.

Although few cigar enthusiasts will be such early risers, there are still a number of early risers among us who enjoy a fine smoke in the twilight period before the sun risers. Still, the morning lasts until noon, which provides a wide window for those who like to partake before lunch.

The circumstances in which you may enjoy a morning cigar can vary somewhat. For instance, some people will have a cigar when walking the dogs, when driving to work or indeed before, after, or during breakfast.

Although everyone may have different personal preferences, the palate and olfactory nerves tend to be at their most refined in the morning. As a result, they’re also usually more sensitive and can easily be overwhelmed by full-bodied or heavy cigars.

Opt For Mild Cigars

Nub Connecticut Cigar & Espresso CoffeeTherefore, it’s generally agreed that cigars best smoked in the morning feature an overall mild body. Consequently, the majority of mild cigars will often feature a Connecticut wrapper as highlighted in the list above.

Not all Connecticut tobacco is grown in the USA, though, and there are several varieties. The most well-known is Connecticut shade that is grown under cheese cloths.

Meanwhile, Ecuador is known for its own type of Connecticut leaf that is grown under the country’s natural cloud cover.

Similarly, mild cigars will usually be crafted from earlier tobacco primings. As you’ll learn in our tobacco anatomy guide, the leaves are harvested in stages that are referred to as primings.

Tobacco Leaf Primings For making Cigars

Earlier primings at the bottom of the plant such as the Volado or Visus tend to be larger but also thinner and lighter. As such, they tend to be quite mild and aromatic as they feature fewer oils and less nicotine.

Furthermore, they will tend to burn faster than later primings, which means that the cigars are consumed slightly faster. Conversely, volado tobacco doesn’t go out as easily as a ligero so you can enjoy longer pauses between each draw.

Nevertheless, bear in mind that all cigars are composed through an intricate blending process. Therefore, most mild cigars will also feature later primings and fuller varieties to offer a more harmonious experience.

Morning Cigar Pairings

Macanudo Gold Leaf Cigar & EspressoAs we briefly mentioned above, cigars can be enjoyed in the morning in a variety of settings. Occasionally, they’re smoked alone as it’s not always convenient to have a cigar and a drink while driving or walking the dogs. Nevertheless, there are a number of excellent combinations.

Unsurprisingly, morning cigars are rarely consumed with alcohol. However, there are exceptions if you’re feeling decadent. For instance, champagne with breakfast is a wonderfully luxurious way to start the day and what better to add than a cigar? After all, it was a common habit for Winston Churchill!

Typically, most cigars considered as the best to smoke in the morning tend to pair well with coffee. This is unlikely to be coincidental as the combination is very popular and for good reason. Both are pleasures that stimulate the palate in very similar ways while simultaneously waking the senses for the day ahead.

However, we do offer a dedicated series of guides for the best cigars to smoke with coffee. This guide can particularly come in handy if you want some specific recommendations for any time of day.

How Did We Rank These Cigars?

Row Of Por Larrañaga Cigars In BoxIn order to provide you with a definitive list, we’ve only featured cigars that we’ve reviewed or at least had the opportunity to try. After all, we wish to provide a reliable selection of quality cigars that you can enjoy in the morning.

For those that are featured in reviews, each was put through the Bespoke Unit Cigar Formula in order to reward cigars with accurate scores. As we were frustrated with the seemingly arbitrary scoring by some publications, we sought to create a detailed system that allowed us to justify our own evaluations.

This concept was under under development since 2017 in order to provide readers with a quantifiable review matrix. It debuted with our review of the Avo Nicaragua in August 2019 and you can see it in action in all of our recent cigar reviews.

Today, we are able to use the review matrix as a baseline when putting together the lists of the best cigars for different occasions and circumstances. Therefore, rest assured that they were not assembled by random but with conviction.
