Is it still possible to,… and How does One identify a Brand with the potential to be Manically’ Popular ?
I remember, Panerai,… suddenly became extremely popular
What does it take – besides Massive advertising – to create Brand Popularity ?
Hey there,
It’s quite difficult to determine which brand may become extremely popular. Indeed, most brands don’t become extremely popular and the behavior we’ve seen over the past few years has been driven by a number of forces, including speculation, which may never come around in the future in the same way again. As you mention, Panerai was massive in the early 2010s and today they largely sell for less than retail on the pre-owned market.
Ultimately, I don’t believe it’s a worthwhile endeavor to try to figure out which brand is “next up”.

HI, I HAVE AN OLD WOMAN’S WATCH THAT HAS A DOOR THAT HIDES THE CRYSTAL/ WATCH FACE. IT OPENS/CLOSES WITH TINY LITTLE HINGES. IT HAS A PICTURE OF A COLONIAL LOOKING COUPLE. LIKE DURING THE GEORGE WASHINGTON ERA ON THE FRONT OF THE DOOR. A MAN, STANDING HUGGING A WOMAN FROM THE BACK. THE MATERIAL OF WHAT THE PICTURE IS ON IS LIVE PORCELINE OR OF PYREX TYPE.MY QUESTION IS, WHAT IS THE NAME OF THAT DOOR THAT COVERS THE FACE OF THE WATCH? THANK YOU. PLEASE EXCUSE THE ALL CAPS, I CAN’T SEE VERY WELL.
Hey there Tammy,
From what I can find online, the name I see used for such a cover is a “hinged cover”. I also see the term “cabriolet wristwatch” used but this encompasses more than just watches with a hinged cover, it also includes models where the entire watch case rotates on an axis.

Hi, I know very little about watches and my fiancee is head over hills into collecting although he has just begun and has been trying his best to learn all there is to know about the time pieces . My question is if there is no name brand on the face , how is it that he would be able to find out the brand of his watch. He has some with only Quartz on the face plate but nothing else . He is going insane with curiosity, oh and they are all mens watchs the calendar top type elegant .
Hello Nerina,
If the face of the watch doesn’t contain the brand of the timepiece, it can be difficult to determine who manufactured it. Sometimes the brand name may be etched on the back of the watch, or even inside the case, though you’ll usually need somewhat specialized tools to open a watch case. Broadly speaking, it can be quite complicated to determine who manufactured a quartz watch if it’s not branded as tens of millions are made each year.
