Typically associated with only one cocktail, pisco is surprisingly versatile and can be used as a key ingredient for a number of recipes.

1. Pisco Sour

Pisco Sour Cocktail

This cocktail is so popular that when people refer to pisco itself, they’re usually talking about the pisco sour. In fact, it’s so iconic that it has been integrated in Latin American culture and there are many bars that specialise in pisco sours and their variants.

You’ll need the following to make it:

  • 60 ml (2 Oz) Pisco
  • 30 ml (1 Oz) Lime Juice
  • 30 ml (1 Oz) Simple Syrup
  • Egg White
  • Angostura Bitters

Firstly, check that your egg is fresh by placing it in a glass of cold water. If it sinks, it should be fine. Meanwhile, an egg that floats indicates that it isn’t fresh enough.

Crack the egg and pour the white into a cocktail shaker. Add the pisco, lime juice, and simple syrup before shaking vigorously so the egg emulsifies. Afterwards, add six ice cubes and shake again until the shaker is ice-cold to the touch. Double strain into a glass and then garnish with dashes of Angostura bitters.

2. Pisco Punch

Mai Tai Cocktail

Another classic pisco cocktail, this one isn’t dissimilar to the pisco sour. However, it substitutes the egg white for pineapple. If you’re vegan or don’t want to use raw egg white, it’s a wonderfully fruity alternative.

It requires the following ingredients:

  • 60 ml (2 Oz) Pisco
  • 15 ml (½ Oz) Lemon Juice
  • 30 ml (1 Oz) Simple Syrup
  • Fresh Pineapple
  • 1 Dash Orange Bitters

Blend or muddle a slice of pineapple into a pulp. Blending is more effective as muddling can result in fibres or chunks of pineapple. You can also blend the pineapple with the simple syrup so it isn’t as thick and is easier to work with afterwards.

Add all of the ingredients into a shaker and shake vigorously until cold to the touch. Double strain into a tumbler glass and garnish it with an orange twist or lime peel.

3. Andean Dusk

Rosé Champagne Cocktail

This champagne cocktail is a great way to express pisco’s more vinous character. Indeed, it’s a refined and affluent drink but well worth sampling if you’re looking for an afternoon refreshment.

It consists of the following ingredients:

  • 30 ml (1 Oz) Pisco
  • 15 ml (½ Oz) Lemon Juice
  • 8 ml (¼ Oz) Simple Syrup
  • Rosé Champagne (To Taste)
  • 3 Red Seedless Grapes

Muddle the grapes into the base of a shaker and then add the pisco, simple syrup, and lemon juice. Shake with ice until cold and then strain into a chilled flute or coupe glass. Top it up with the champagne to taste and garnish it with an additional grape if desired.

4. El Capitán

Bar Drake Manhattan Cocktail

A simple martini cocktail that uses pisco instead of the usual choices like gin or vodka. You’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 60 ml (2 Oz) Pisco
  • 30 ml (1 Oz) Vermouth
  • 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters

Combine the ingredients into a mixing glass and stir with ice. Strain into a coupe or cocktail glass and garnish with either a lemon twist or cherries depending on your taste.

5. Dulchin

Sour Cocktail

Supposedly named after a New York hardware company heir who didn’t drink grain spirits and was bored of rum, the Dulchin is certainly a complex option.

Continuing with the wonderful lemon and ouzo pairing, this cocktail uses Italian limoncello to produce a boozier experience:

  • 60 ml (2 Oz) Pisco
  • 15 ml (½ Oz) Grand Marnier
  • 15 ml (½ Oz) Apricot Liqueur
  • 8 ml (¼ Oz) Lime Cordial
  • 8 ml (¼ Oz) Grenadine Syrup

Shake all of the ingredients with ice until well-chilled and then strain into a cocktail or coupe glass. Garnish with a lemon peel.

6. Piscola

Cuba Libre Cocktail

Barely even a cocktail, this simple mixer is actually a national celebration in Chile. Indeed, Chileans have been celebrating Piscola Day on February 8th since 2003!

Typically, it’s a mix of Coca-Cola and pisco. However, other soft drinks like ginger ale, lemonade, and tonic water aren’t unheard of. The ratio tends to be somewhere between 1:1 and 1:3 depending on how strong you want it.

Simply add the pisco to a tall glass with ice and top up with the soft drink of your choice. You can also add slices of lemon or lime as garnish. Ultimately, it’s the Chilean equivalent of a Cuba Libre!

7. Chilcano

Ouzo Tonic Cocktail

Take a ginger ale piscola and make it fancy! Basically, that’s the Chilcano and it’s a very pleasantly refreshing drink indeed!

You’ll need:

  • 60 ml (2 Oz) Pisco
  • 15 ml (½ Oz) Lime Juice
  • 8 ml (¼ Oz) Ginger Juice
  • 23 ml (¾ Oz) Simple Syrup
  • Ginger Ale
  • Angostura Bitters

Shake the pisco, lime and ginger juice once dry and then again with ice. Double strain into a tall glass and top with the ginger ale. Garnish with a dash of bitters and a lime wheel.

8. Mosquito

Best Ouzo Cocktails

A wonderfully appropriate pun, the mosquito is essentially a pisco mojito. Like the classic rum drink, it can be made in a pitcher or served individually.

Each portion requires the following:

  • 60 ml (2 Oz) Pisco
  • 30 ml (1 Oz) Lime Juice
  • 23 ml (¾ Oz) Simple Syrup
  • 6 Mint Leaves
  • Lime

Muddle the mint at the base of a shaker with the simple syrup and then add ice, the pisco, and lime juice. Shake until cold and strain into a glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with lime wedges and a mint sprig.

9. Wisecrack Fizz

This one’s a little different from other pisco cocktails. It’s a tall elderflower-infused grapefruit drink that’s wonderfully refreshing for summer days under the sun.

You’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 45 ml (1½ Oz) Pisco
  • 30 ml (1 Oz) Elderflower Liqueur
  • 30 ml (1 Oz) Grapefruit Juice
  • 15 ml (½ Oz) Lemon Juice
  • Soda Water

Shake all the ingredients except the soda water with ice and strain into a tall ice-filled glass. Top up with the soda water to taste.

10. Sacred Valley

Bramble Gin Cocktail

Now here’s one with character! If you’re fond of smoky whisky and fruit-forward flavours, our last cocktail is one that you must absolutely try!

It needs the following ingredients:

  • 60 ml (2 Oz) Pisco
  • 8 ml (¼ Oz) Islay Single Malt Whisky
  • 30 ml (1 Oz) Passion Fruit Cordial
  • 8 ml (¼ Oz) Honey
  • 2 Dashes Orange Bitters

Add the passion fruit cordial to a chilled cocktail or coupe glass. Dilute the honey with an equal amount of warm water at the base of a cocktail shaker. Add the pisco, whisky, bitters, and ice to then shake until cold. Strain into the glass and garnish with berries.
