1. Versatile Brogues: Allen Edmonds Strandmok

The Strandmok is one of the first pairs of shoes that we reviewed on Bespoke Unit and it still carries a lot of weight today! Crafted with a 360° Goodyear welt, they’re robust and hard-wearing with excellent water resistance.

Meanwhile, the striking Dainite rubber soles offer comfort and shock absorption. Not only are they robust and durable shoes, but the Strandmok are extraordinarily versatile. You can wear them casually with jeans or chinos but they look stunning with tweed or rustic-style vintage suits.

"Some of the most versatile shoes we have worn, the Strandmok is perfect with chinos, jeans, and even some suits!"
Bespoke Unit Rating: ★★★★★

2. Wholecut Shoes: Magnanni Crucero

These beautiful wholecut shoes have been handmade in Spain using a Blake stitch. Since they’re crafted from a single piece of leather, they’re a little pricey. However, their elegant profile and sleek features render them ideal for both formal and special occasions.

Furthermore, a hand-painted burnished finish provides additional visual depth, which makes these shoes a bold yet tasteful statement for the refined gentleman.

3. Boots: Wolverine Original 1,000 Mile

Since 1914, Wolverine have followed the same design and manufacturing process to produce the 1000 Mile Original. As a beautifully constructed blucher boot, it’s robust and more than earns its name.

First created over a century ago as workwear, the 1,000 Mile Boot is now enjoyed casually. However, its high-quality Goodyear construction and beautiful appearance renders it quite easy to wear when dressing up. Therefore, it may go quite nicely with some businesswear, too.

4. Double Monk: Massimo Matteo Italian

Massimo Matteo is best known for its stylish yet affordable footwear. Although many of its models are in the sub-$100 range, these are often made in Brazil and tend not to last very long.

If you’re willing to spend just a little bit more, it grants you access to these stunning Italian-made shoes. By opting for a cement construction, the double monk has a very low and slender profile. The result is a graceful shoe but bear in mind that you won’t be able to change the soles when they wear down!

5. Driving Shoes: Salvatore Ferragamo Parigi

Salvatore Ferragamo is known for its celebrated Italian driving shoes. Indeed, these are a pricey albeit iconic choice in footwear. A new model of the Parigi line is released every year and we’re particularly fond the 2021 version.

Combining oxblood with a deep blue hue, the shoe’s design is brought together by a stunning gold-coloured bit in the throat. As a distinctively premium option, it has an unavoidable Italian elegance.

6. Winter Boots: Ross & Snow Riccardo

We were very impressed when we first reviewed Ross & Snow. Designed primarily for the winter season, its hardy and well-built boots are both functional and stunning. We love the Riccardo boots in particular, which are somewhat reminiscent of Red Wings.

The Italian calfskin leather uppers are lined with organically raised and ethically sourced shearling wool. As a result, they’re unbelievably warm and it’s sometimes tempting to leave them on around the house.

Furthermore, the footbed is removable and you’ll have the choice between a shearling or a cushioned ergonomic insert for additional support. While the regular insert is nice, we can’t help but always wear it with shearling.

7. Sneakers: Adidas Original Stan Smith

Despite many old and new brands releasing different sneakers to the market, it’s still hard to beat the classic Stan Smith. Loyal to its original design, it has an iconically timeless design that’s perfect for most casual wear.

With their full-grain leather uppers, the Stan Smith perform and age well through intense use. They’re also designed with an EVA midsole for some cushioning while the tonal rubber outsole offers great traction given the flat design.

While Stan Smith sneakers all come in white, you can choose the accent colour of the ornamentation. Whether you opt for green, red, blue or yellow, they’re all excellent choices and offer a little pop of colour.

8. Boat Shoe: Sperry Authentic Original

When it comes to boat shoes, the Sperry Authentic Original is widely considered to be the quintessential boat shoe. This classic 2-eye boat shoe makes for the perfect casual summer footwear and is available in a wide variety of colourways as well as materials to choose from.

Relatively affordable, ideal for throwing on and off during the summertime, it’s hard to beat Sperry’s boat shoes thanks to the combination of style and value for money.

9. Saddle Shoe: Johnston & Murphy Tabor

Saddle shoes are a great casual to business casual choice in footwear. Their classic American design has a nice vintage feel but the shoes retain an element of dressy elegance.

Our favourite saddles shoes are made by Johnston & Murphy. Made from premium calfskin leather, the uppers are rustic oiled Nubuck with a mahogany finish. A great casual option for the dapper man!

Why Buy Shoes On Zappos?

Allen Edmonds Park Avenue Dress Shoes

Based in Las Vegas, Nevada, Zappos is an American shoe retailer that was founded in 1999 by Nick Swinmurn. It first operated under the domain name Shoesite.com before quickly switching to “Zappos”, which is in reference to “zapatos”, the Spanish word for “shoes”.

A trailblazer in online shopping, the website grew from strength to strength before it was purchased by Amazon ten years after it first launched for over a billion dollars.

Throughout its lifetime, Zappos has focused on a customer-first approach. When it first opened, it used a drop-shipping business model, which freed the company from any stock as orders were fulfilled by other vendors.

However, the young Zappos team soon realised that this model meant that it had no control over the customer experience. As a result, Zappos transitioned towards a hybrid technique. Eventually, over 75% of its sales were from its own stock.

While the remaining 25% was seen as “easy money” as Zappos had little to do apart transmit the orders to the responsible vendors, the team realised that its priority was the customer. Consequently, it made the hard choice of removing all drop-shipping from its website at the risk of losing a quarter of its revenue.

A Defining Decision

At the time, Zappos was barely a profitable entity so it was a bold move. However, the late CEO Tony Hsieh believed that it was the right thing to do for the customers. Ultimately, it had a positive ripple effect for the company from its philosophy to its popularity.

Indeed, Zappos became huge thanks to positive reviews and word-of-mouth. Its choice to sacrifice 25% of revenue for the customer was well-known and the act itself helped create trust but also allowed greater control of inventory and order fulfilment.

For instance, while Zappos’ catalogue is vast, the shoes feel curated and carefully chosen. Meanwhile, Zappos is renowned for its very accessible and competitive prices as well as its generous returns policy. Therefore, people feel safe when making purchases and taking risks with shoes that might not fit or suit them because they can easily be sent back for a refund.

Whatever type of shoes you need, Zappos most definitely stocks it. From running shoes to elegant dress shoes and hiking boots to heavy-duty workboots, you’re almost guaranteed multiple options whatever your budget.
