How To Choose Comfortable Shoes
We shockingly recently learned that the majority of American men actually wear footwear that harms their feet. While they won’t be dropping off, they can instead cause conditions such as Plantar Fasciitis or overpronation.
Given that we wear shoes throughout the entire day, it’s essential to wear shoes that are kind to your feet. However, this tends to quite often get overlooked.
Yet, you’re here for a reason and whether you suffer from foot pain or sore feet, you want to make a lifestyle change.
Unfortunately, we can’t just wear slippers and sneakers all day. In fact, most of us have to adhere to strict dress codes for work. Consequently, the guide above endeavoured to cater to these very needs.
Nevertheless, you may be wondering what can offer your comfort or indeed how to improve the comfort that you experience.
Measure Your Feet Properly
Surprisingly, the most common problem is that many of us are wearing shoes that aren’t the right size. When was the last time you measured your feet because most people don’t do it for years.
Of course, you can do this at home rather than feeling obliged to going into a store. However, a professional may give you a more accurate result.
Once you’re familiar with your true size, consider reading on how a shoe should fit. You may be surprised what you find out!
Bear in mind that not all shoes will fit you even if they’re the right size. All shoes are made using “lasts”, which are foot-shaped moulds.
As they differ between brands, there are some that may fit you while others won’t. This is especially true in the foot arches and it’s important to understand the curve of yours.
Breathable Materials
While the materials used for making a shoe won’t provide instant relief for any soreness, they do make a huge difference in the long-term.
Shoes made from synthetic or heavily-treated materials won’t breathe, which can cause a buildup of moisture.
This can cause your feet to rub and blister over time. As your feet will compensate to take pressure of the sore spots, you’ll force them into an unnatural position, which can cause long-term injuries.
Support Your Arches
We mentioned this earlier and covered it more in our arch support shoe guide. In short, the key is to provide just the right amount of support that they’re cupped by the cushion.
Too little support may cause your ankles to twist as you pronate. Meanwhile, too much support can bruise the arches and be a painful experience.
Stable & Lightweight Footwear
Flexibility may be the fashionable topic but stability is what we believe to be key. Shoes that are too flexible become unstable, which can cause your feet to curl and bend in ways that they should.
Meanwhile, stability prevents you twisting your ankles or having an unnatural gait.
With stability features such as shanks, your weight is better distributed across the sole. This takes lessens the load on some pressure points and reliefs the feet.
Cushioning
Cushioning is another fashionable topic but for good reason. Cushion inside the shoes will cradle the contours of your feet and reduce pressure on key areas.
Generally, it’s much more comfortable but also offers extra shock absorption on the foot.
Similarly, you can expect some cushioning in the midsole. This is usually provided by materials like EVA, PU or even leather.
Midsole cushioning is the first line of defence against heavy shocks on the feet. Therefore, this is something to keep tabs on when looking for comfortable shoes.
Finally, the cushion can also be contoured, which provides some motion control to your heel. This is something that mostly benefits people with pronation.
However, even normal feet can gain something from motion control. In short, motion control locks the heel in place and prevents the foot rotating in the shoe. If you’re always moving, it can prevent sprains and strains in unnatural positions.
Achilles Notches & Ankle Collars
A similar concept are Achilles notches and ankle collars. These don’t offer any form of motion control per se but they do prevent the foot slipping inside the shoe.
As mentioned above, blisters cause discomfort and the feet will try to compensate. Thanks to these features, friction is reduced, which lessens the chances of the outbreak of sores.
