What Are Square Glasses?
With advances in plastic moulding technology, square frame glasses became enormously popular throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Although there were many variations such as the wayfarer, square glasses grew into a category of their own.
However, following the rock & roll craze, square frame glasses slowly became square themselves. Over time, they became associated with geeks and nerds and were often a source of ridicule when broken and fixed back together with tape.
However, big bulky square-shaped glasses experienced a short-lived resurgence in the 1980s before encountering the same downfall at the end of the century. It wasn’t until the popular hipster subculture made being a geek empowering.
Shortly thereafter, square glasses were cool once more thanks to the evocative retro feel and unique colours. Today, it’s one of the most popular frames available.

Ideal Matches
If yours is one of the following face shapes, you’ll find that you can wear square frames without any issues. That said, there may be a few styling tips to ensure you get the right fit.
Oval Face Shape
It goes without saying that oval face shapes can play with different styles of square frames without much fear of it backfiring.
Of course, the only advice we give is to make sure that they’re properly fitted. Other than that, you’re pretty much free to explore all the styles available to you.
You may find it helpful to read up on the styling advice we offer via the oval face shape page.
Round Face Shape
If there is one that needs square frames, it’s probably the round face shape. Of course, that is not to say that they’re the only option available but they do provide the wearer with the most benefits.
Thanks to their angular edges and proportionate shape, they will help bring out your features and reduce any general softness.
However, just take care that they aren’t too rectangular as this may widen the face and make it even rounder.
If you want to try a different style instead, check out our round face shape guide for more information.
Triangle Face Shape
As a general rule, square frames are an excellent choice for men with triangle face shapes.
Due to their proportional and angular shape, they help widen the forehead and offset the prominent jawline. The result is a face that appears squarer and more structured.
Normally we’d suggest round glasses for faces with strong features. However, you’ll note that in the triangle face shape guide, they’re something of an exceptional in order to balance out their strong jawline.
Acceptable Matches
If your face shape falls under this category, you may be able to wear square frames. That said, check the advice we provide so to find the ones that suit you best. If you’re not convinced and think it may be too risky, you can always head to that face shape’s linked page. You’ll find information there to help you style it easily.
Diamond Face Shape
If yours is a diamond shape and you want to try square frames, just remember that angular edges will bring out your features.
Therefore, if your goal is to make yours smoother because your features are too chiselled to your taste, these might not be your best bet.
Nevertheless, square frames will broaden your narrow forehead and bring out those prominent features. So they can work if they fit right.
However, if that’s not what you want to go for, check out our diamond face shape guide to discover some tips for styling.
Heart Face Shape
Heart shapes could wear square frames quite well but they need to really make sure that the glasses fit them well.
If the glasses are too wide, they’ll emphasise your broad forehead and exaggerate your existing features.
However, if your frames of choice fit really well, square glasses will help broaden your jawline and bring out those cheekbones.
You can head to the heart face shape guide for detailed tips on styling if you need to.
Oblong Face Shape
If properly fitted, square framed glasses look great on oblong face shapes. However, be careful that the model you pick isn’t too tall.
Instead, try to opt for frames that lean towards the rectangular side of things. These will add a little width to your face rather than elongate it.
Once you’ve found the right model, you’ll notice how square frames will bring out your features that are otherwise soft.
If you’re not convinced, head to our detailed oblong face shape page. There are alternatives available.
Incompatible Face Shapes
The following face shapes may struggle with square frame glasses. We’ll explain why and offer an alternative. If you want to read more, you can head to the face shape’s own guide.
Square Face Shape
Although it may seem logical that a square face shape would suit square glasses, this rarely tends to be the case.
At the very best, it may not cause any adverse effects but it won’t provide any benefits either. However, wearing square glasses will likely widen the face and exaggerate their existing features.
For a harmonious pairing, square face shapes are better opting for rounder shapes that will complement their morphology.
We would highly recommend aviator frames instead. Yet if you really want this style of frame, you could always try wayfarers.

"Clasically conversative or boldly outgoing. Square frames were a versatile choice that I was delighted to go for thanks to this guide!"Rating: 5.0 ★★★★★
Are rectangular glasses in the square category or is it on it’s own?
Hi Ian,
they tend to be in their own category. For instance, most rimless glasses are rectangular.
Best,
CP
What face shapes fit with rectangular glasses the most? Does diamond face shape fit with them?
Diamond shape works but make sure that the frames aren’t too angular. Otherwise, it would be best with oblong face shapes.
Best,
CP
What about oval?
That should be fine too but make sure that they’re not too wide!
Hi Charles,
I wanted to ask you about the aviators on the oblong face, I researched in youtube and alot other websites, and they say it’s best suited for oblong face, and at your website it’s incompatible if not mistaken
Hi Exander,
In all cases, face shape guides are simply guidelines and shouldn’t be taken as gospel. However, we would argue that aviators aren’t the best choice for oblong as they risk elongating the face and softening the edges. It’s up to you whether you want to wear them.
Best,
CP
