What Are The Best Computer Glasses Frames?

The average American spends approximately six hours in front of an electronic device in any given work day. Between phones, desktops, tablets, laptops, and smart TV’s, we’re constantly connected to each other no matter where we are in the world.

We check our phones approximately once every 6.5 minutes. This strains our eyes and can cause some painful symptoms such as sore eyes, headaches and even migraines.

Therefore, we’ve never needed the appropriate eyewear more than now.

In order to help you find the best computer glasses for your lifestyle, we’ve tried out all the best and most trusted retailers on the internet.

All of the glasses featured below have been tested and selected by our team from a total of more than 20 different pairs. Furthermore, they’re all compatible with prescription lenses too.

Our current top computer glasses come from the following retailers:

  1. EyeBuy Direct Sight Relax Digital Glasses
  2. EBDBlue Digital Screen Glasses
  3. Zenni Blokz Blue Blocker Lenses
  4. Glasses USA Digital Block Lenses

1. EyeBuyDirect Sight Relax Digital Glasses

  • Price: $50-$100 Frames & Lenses Included [Buy Now]
  • Country Of Origin: France
  • Brand: Essilor
  • Availability: Selected Frames
  • Key Feature: Blue Light Filter
  • Other Features: Eyezen Focus, Anti-Smudge, Anti-Reflective

EyeBuy Direct has clearly tackled the issue of digital eye strain far more seriously than its competitors. We were amazed to find that they had teamed up with Essilor, a French company who designed the prestigious Eyezen lenses.

Eyezen are one of the world leaders in progressive digital lens technology. Their patented lenses include Eyezen Focus, an in-built reading enhancement to help relieve eyestrain symptoms.

This is one of the features available for even non-prescription glasses and is a pleasure to use. Additionally, the lenses filter out blue light as you would hope but also include anti-smudge and anti-reflective coatings.

Despite Eyezen’s success, the package has been rebranded as Eye Buy Direct’s Sight Relax package. Although made by the same brand and offering the same features, it sports a different name.

We were particularly surprised to see how cheap they were too. Unlike most retailers, they’re not sold as add-ons but selected frames include the Eyezen lenses. Overall, prices range between $50 to $100 for the frames and lenses together.

Head to the Sight Relax presentation page here to see all the frames available. We believe that they’re truly the best on the market.

2. Eye Buy Direct EBDBlue Digital Screen Glasses

  • Price: $25-$89 Frames & Lenses Included [Buy Now]
  • Country Of Origin: USA
  • Brand: EyeBuy Direct
  • Availability: Selected Frames
  • Key Feature: Blue Light Filter
  • Other Features: Water Resistant, Anti-Reflective

When we said that Eye Buy Direct took digital lenses seriously, we weren’t exaggerating. Not only do they offer Eyezen’s lenses but they have also created their own in-house solution.

Side-by-side, we found that their EBD Blue series performed just as well as the Eyezen lenses. The only discernable difference was the lack of magnification that you get from Eyezen’s Focus feature.

Furthermore, Eye Buy Direct have catered to children and there are smaller frames available too. This is a great option for kids as a preventative measure.

Finally, like the Eyezen lenses, these are only offered in selected frames but the price is bundled together. You’ll note on their EBD Blue page that prices start at as little as $25 and don’t go passed $89!

3. Zenni Optical Blokz Blue Light Glasses

  • Price: $16.95 Lens Add-On [Buy Now]
  • Country Of Origin: USA
  • Brand: Mitsui Chemicals
  • Availability: Any Frame
  • Key Feature: Blue Light Filter
  • Other Features: Anti-Reflective Coating

We were really impressed by Zenni’s Blokz lenses and a little surprised too. Often specialising in budget and funky frames, we didn’t expect them to take the matter so seriously.

In fact, rather than sell special coatings, they collaborated with Mitsui Chemicals, a leading innovator in ophthalmic lenses. Instead, they offer an entire lens made specifically for screen use, which also helps protect from too much glare.

Zenni boast that their Blokz doesn’t feature the yellow tint caused by some computer glasses too. We noticed that these lenses were very clear indeed but they didn’t perform quite as well as those made by Eyezen.

Nevertheless, they’re remarkably cheap and can be added to virtually any frame for only $16.95. Given how budget friendly Zenni can be, these can make for a very good value purchase!

4. Glasses USA Digital Block Lenses

  • Price: $39 Lens Add-On [Buy Now]
  • Country Of Origin: USA
  • Brand: Glasses USA
  • Availability: Any Frame
  • Key Feature: Blue Light Filter
  • Other Features: Unknown

Unlike the other retailers on this list, Glasses USA are surprisingly quiet about their computer lenses. However, they do offer these as a package with any of their frames.

They perform quite well and thanks to Glasses USA’s range, you can add them to designer frames. This is great news for the fashionably-conscious!

Like some offerings, they feature a special coating that helps fight eye fatigue and migraines. However, we found that they seemed to lack a bit with regard to performance when compared to either Zenni or Eyezen. Still, they’re a reputable company and have some great frames to choose from.

Nevertheless, they’re quite cheap at only $39 on top of any frame that you may choose. So prices can be quite low if you go for some budget frames.

Finally, at only $27.95 on Zenni, these glasses offer excellent value for money, which includes single and non-prescription lenses.

Why Do We Need Computer Glasses?

Man working at laptopDo you spend your day working in front of a computer screen? Do you suffer from pounding headaches and sore eyes in the evening? The chances are that you’re suffering from what’s known as Computer Vision Syndrome.

You may have perfect eyesight but being stuck in front of a computer puts pressure on your eyes and causes them to degenerate at an alarming rate. Before you know it, you’ll be looking at our guide to the best prescription glasses to buy online!

Fortunately, optometry has come a long way in a very short period of time. Nowadays there are methods of protecting your eyes with what are known as computer screen or digital lens glasses.

Why Wear Them Now?

According to computer-vision-syndrom.org, if you spend even two hours a day in front of a screen, your chances of developing CVS are 90%! Your risk of early-onset macular degeneration also increases, as do incidences of headache, fatigue, and the general feeling of needing to massage your eyeballs.

It’s great that eye care professionals recognised this issue reasonably early into our culture’s “stuck to a device at all times” phase. If we don’t do something to take care of our eyes, the chances of younger generations dealing with parents’ whose vision is nearly (if not entirely) gone goes through the roof.

Our feeling is that excessive device use is going to be the next cigarette epidemic: something that was considered harmless (even beneficial) for a long time, but was in fact quite harmful.

Similarly, computer glasses are often used to block out artificial light and glaring. LED and neon lights are a known culprit but did you know that even the sun’s glare can cause extreme headaches?

For instance, many professional and frequent drivers have began using computer glasses for the very same reason. This is often because normal sunglasses don’t provide enough protection whereas polarised sunglasses would.

Do Computer Glasses Really Work?

Man looking at smartphone in bedShort answer: yes. A few years ago, many computer glasses were marketed in a very gimmicky, huckster-ish way, so it’s understandable if you’re skeptical about them.

As it happens, the effect is real and not placebo. We get into more specifics below.

The Science Of How They Work

There are two main things to know about how computer glasses work:

  1. They use an anti-reflective (AR) coating on the lenses which reduces glare from your screens and increases contrast, and
  2. They filter out harmful blue-violet light that’s emitted by the various devices we’re glued to. Light in the range that blue-violet falls in is referred to as “high-energy visible” (HEV) light, and it’s very damaging to the eyes.

Computer glasses lenses used to often be yellow in colour. However, as Eyezen and Zenni above have proved, this is becoming less common.

Furthermore, the anti-reflective coating can be applied to your prescription lenses too. If you feel like you would benefit from computer glasses, get your prescription up-to-date and use it as a chance to buy some sweet new frames!

Should I Buy Computer Glasses?

eye buy direct browline frames on macbookTake a look at some common symptoms of CVS:

  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Red, dry eyes
  • Stuff neck and / or back
  • Blurry vision
  • Tension

Do you notice any of these symptoms after a work day? Even if you don’t, we’re all looking at screens far longer than is healthy. After all, we don’t have much of a choice. Many of our livelihoods depend on computers.

Even if you don’t necessarily feel eye strain, you’re still exposing yourself to more blue light than the eye should be exposed to.

Computer glasses are a worthwhile preventative measure. Trust us, you don’t want to experience severe CVS. Not only is it draining but it can come from nowhere and be extremely painful. Even milder forms can disrupt your workday as an unnecessary distraction.

In addition to an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure, computer glasses have come a long way stylistically. While they’re still available in yellow-tinted gaming versions, there are plenty now that look just like regular glasses and don’t require a prescription.

We think that you can get the best of both worlds (protection and style) if you pick up a pair of computer glasses.

What Next?

If you’re already suffering from computer vision syndrome, computer glasses may really change your life. You’ll discover energy and productivity like you never had before and your headaches will no longer be a handicap.

Even if your don’t have symptoms yet, we still recommend them. Therefore, if you’re ready to make the leap, maybe you’d like to find the best glasses for you? Check out some of the following guides to see how we can help:
