How Are Fragrances Associated With Seasons?

Tabac Original Eau de Cologne & FlowersAs mentioned earlier, certain fragrances can create vivid imagery that evokes a specific season. Olfactory memory is particularly powerful and the human mind is capable of associating experiences and places by smell.

Because of this, it is also able to link odours and aromas with seasons and periods of time. We build these links through our environmental experiences and memories.

Similarly, these odours and their associated memories often come with particular emotions. Usually, these can be quite strong as well as whimsically comforting, which makes us enjoy the smell even more.

With our own unique environments, such associations may vary from person to person. However, nature is a relative constant with its own unifying smells. Therefore, when perfumers are creating blends, they often work meticulously to act on these and the emotional response they provoke.

How Do You Define A Spring Fragrance?

Maurer & Wirtz 4711 Bottles Yellow FlowersBeing the season when the sun starts to shine and the flowers begin to blossom, spring is a month where life flourishes. Therefore, vibrant imagery can be created through the manipulation of such odours.

The practice has existed since the dawn of modern perfumery. However, one of the most famous examples of a springtime fragrance can be traced back to 18th-Century Germany.

Giovanni “Johann” Maria Farina was an Italian-born perfumer who is most famously known for creating the first Eau de Cologne. However, his true objective was to develop a blend that reminded him of home whilst he resided in Germany.

Although he named it Kölnisch Wasser after his new hometown, he wrote to his brother to tell him how much it reminded him of his birthplace. For Farina, it evoked an Italian spring morning. He added that he could envisage mountain daffodils and orange blossoms after the rain.

Common Examples of Springtime Fragrance Notes

Pinaud Clubman After Shave Lotion Bottle Flowers & GrassIn many respects, the approach to spring fragrances hasn’t changed. Aromatics and floral notes are still common notes in a springtime fragrance. These can usually be found in the head and heart of a fragrance respectively.

Aromas of sage, rosemary and lavender are particularly popular choices as they’re easily recognisable and great a complementary bouquet. Meanwhile, perfumers can make use of woody aromas to draw out forestry notions.

Cedar and sandalwood are both versatile and popular choices. With their powdery evaporation, they can be used as either fresh or mellow notes.

Given that springtime is a relatively wet month, this can be replicated through smell. Patchouli has an odour that can be likened to moist soil. Therefore, pairing this can create imagery of a forest just after the rain.

Likewise, ambergris is a type of musk that originally came from whales, which can often be found in both spring and summer fragrance bases. Today, the practice is outlawed so ambroxide is used instead.

Nevertheless, it develops a fragrance that is both animalistic and oceanic, which can also be likened to pipe tobacco. Including it in a cologne can play off the notion of springtime wildlife.
