If you have a Square face shape, you will probably be similar to the following description:
Your length and width proportions are equal with a forehead and jawline of similar breadth. Hallmarks of this structure are straight cheeks with a broad, strong chin.
If this sounds correct, scroll on down! However, if you’re not quite sure, we cover 7 unique face shapes and yours might be a different one. You can find your face shape following our quick 5-step guide.
Note that the above assessment is a guideline. Every man has some differences. You may discover that you share traits with several face shapes.
Nevertheless, discovering your closest match will prove invaluable when it comes to your styling choices.
Square Face Shape Specifications
The above diagram serves to geometrically assess a Square face shape’s key characteristics. The proportions feature near-equal length features along the width rendering the face relatively straight. Note the low-sitting eye line, defined cheekbones and pronounced jawline, which make for defined features.
With a reputation of being the quintessential masculine face, this face shape has an all-round functional structure that allows for a great range of experimentation. Its inherent virility can be honed to develop an authoritative image that commands respect or underplayed to exude a tenderness under that hard-boiled façade.
Best Square Face Shape Hairstyles
With its angular and masculine features, a square face can easily impress with neat and tight cuts. Extremely short styles like buzz cuts can evoke self-discipline yet a little length on top can provide some casual texture to break away from an overbearing Military look.
Deep side-parts and swept-back styles can be paired with tight fades. Alternatively an undercut to provide textured layering and bring out those chiselled features. Like oval faces, squares have the luxury of being able to enjoy most styles. Note that some specific haircuts or beard styles have guidelines that advise the best course of action.
DO:
- Tight back and sides, fades or undercuts
- Any length on top
- Layering to accent features
- Enjoy nature’s gift
DON’T:
- Avoid precision defined hairline if hair is receding.

Best Square Face Shape Beard Styles
Although this face shape is pretty flawless, men can look at way to enhance their already strong features with a selection of beard or moustache styles. Furthermore, severe jawlines can be softened by creating volume over the chin or over the upper lip whilst trimming it on the sides.
Bear in mind that hard lines in a beard emphasises pre-existing features whilst softer lines reduces them. Narrower beards may appear lost on a Square face’s surface area. Be mindful of this when styling.
Recommended Beard Styles
Best Square Face Shape Moustache Styles
Opt for thick moustaches that complement the face’s bulk. Square faces tend to have a larger appearance so fuller moustaches are recommended. Smaller moustaches may appear lost above the top lip for this reason. You can try angular finishes to bring your features’ sharpness out or something softer to reduce them.
Recommended Moustache Styles
Although oval faces are often credited as the ideal shape, square faces tend to have more freedom when it comes to glasses. Their strong and angular features create an air of confidence, which makes them far more versatile with respect to different styles.
As they’re equally structured and much sturdier in features than oval shapes, it’s harder to knock those proportions off. However, there a few caveats that should be noted beforehand. Firstly, being a square and angular face shape by definition, they should avoid overly square frames.
This is because square frames will over-emphasise your features by mimicking them. In some cases, square frames with rounded or bevelled edges may work fine. Yet if they’re as tall as they are wide, it may be overbearing and likely squash your features by shortening your face length.
Otherwise, slightly trapezoid frames such as wayfarers add enough variety that they can work quite well. Additionally, browline frames or round frames can even add a sense of sophisticated brutality.

really hope anyone can help, thanks!
Hi Amir,
You can fit a certain face shape without looking like a carbon copy of a model.
Yours might be square or triangle. However, I would recommend that you double check your jawline measurement according to our guide.
Best,
CP
my apologies my jawline is 16cm, does that mean it is a triangle?
Hi Amir,
Thanks for the update. In fact, you have the precise dimensions of a diamond face shape. Very few of us have features that are as pronounced as a fashion model. So if yours aren’t as pronounced, it doesn’t that doesn’t mean that it isn’t your face shape.
I recommend that you use the guide for diamond face shapes but refer to some of the rounder shapes (like oval, round and heart) for a few tips on more sloping features if you think that you need it.
Best,
CP
Maybe somebody can help me with my measurements?
Forehead: 6.5
Cheekbones: 6.5
Jawline: 8
Length: 8
I feel like my face shape is square, but I guess it could also be triangle because of the jawline. I’m not too sure. Any help please?
Hi Tony,
It sounds like you’ve given this some decent thought. I can’t say without looking but either square or triangle strike me as the best options.
Otherwise, it could be a mix of both, which means that both guides can offer insight into styling.
Best,
CP
I really appreciate it. I was having a whole lot of trouble trying to figure it out. Thanks again.
Happy to help!

Hi Avaneesh,
You may have an oblong face shape. However, the measurements are very close. There is a chance that your face is square or round.
Best,
CP

Hi, I am unable to measure my face, but I do have some images that may be helpful for you in determining my face shape.
MC
Hi MC,
These aren’t functional links. Can you upload the photos to Instagram or another image sharing platform?
Thanks,

Hi guys. I’m really confused between square, triangle and diamond face cut. Hope that you could help me out.
My facial measurements are:
Face Length: 20cm
Forehead: 17cm
Jawline:20-21cm
Cheekbone:17cm
I guess it is square type, but really confused. Also, hair on edges of forehead comes slightly in. So should I measure from those or from a straight line?
Thanks in adv
Hi Ayush,
If you feel that your face has a closer visual likeness to the square shape, then I suggest that you go with that.
All the best,
CP
Hey Charles, I am unable to determine my face shape even after all doing the measurements. Can you please help me out? Here is an image of my face: **LINK DELETED**
Hi Charles,
It’s hard to say since you (understandably) blurred out the middle of your face but I think that since the forehead appears wider than the cheekbones, you have an overall heart face shape.
All the best,
CP
Hola, just checking in to get a second opinion on my measurements,
Forehead is 6 inches
Cheekbones are 4 inches
Jaw is 8 inches
Face length is 7.75 inches
All measurements are to be taken with a grain of salt
Hi Gavin,
Looks like triangle overall with a touch of oblong. It’s quite possible to have an individual face shape that consists of features of several types.
Best,
CP
It’s a great help to those who have a square face and struggling to choose their beard style. I enjoyed reading this article so much, thank you!
That’s the plan! Thanks for the kind words!

Hi Michele,
Looks like a triangle face shape to me.
All the best,

Hi CP,
I have posted before in your site and you’ve responded to my query. I think that my face shape has changed, because I have lost a bit of weight, and also because I’m still growing. I would really appreciate it if you would take a look at my pictures and tell me what my face shape is.

Hi Aadarsh,
It’s hard to say from a photo from the side with you covering your chin but it appears to be either heart or diamond.
All the best,
CP
Hi CP,
I’ve attached more images, I think it would help you to figure out my face shape.

Hi Aardash,
Head-on, it looks like triangle or square but most likely the latter.
All the best,
CP
Thanks for the help CP,
I think it would help you out if I were to give you my face measurements.
Face Length: 19 cm
Cheekbones:17.5 cm
Jawline:18cm
Forehead: 12.5cm
And when I look at my face in the mirror, my cheekbones and jawline look wider than my forehead, with latter being a tad bit more wider. Last time I’ve posted a similar query nearly three months ago, you told me that I am having a diamond face shape but with some triangle features, especially in the corners of my jawline.
I would highly appreciate it, if you can help me out!
Hi Aardash,
I do have a vague recollection of you but we get so many face shape queries that we had to even close comments on some pages!
Your narrower forehead compared to the jawline indicates a triangle face shape but the regularity between the others would suggest square. While there are some diamond features, they’re pretty minor.
I suggest that you focus on the square face shape suggestions. However, when reading our guides, take a look at what it also says for triangle and perhaps diamond. By using a combination of the three in the right areas, you’ll be able to find some solid tips.
All the best,
CP
Thank you so much for the help CP,
To be honest having features of diamond, triangle and square sounds like a blessing to me. It’s like having the benefits of all the worlds.
Precisely! Happy to help!
Hi CP,
I have always wondered about how much weight gain can drastically change someone’s face shape. And I’ve noticed that Leonardo DiCaprio is currently having a circular face, but earlier i.e during the Titanic era what do you think was his face shape, I think he was having a heart shaped face. What is your verdict?
You’re right. Changes in weight do modify your face shape as does ageing and a variety of other factors. You’re also right in that DiCaprio was a heart face shape before.
Can a mullet fit a square face shape for teenager like me? A boy mullet
Sure, I don’t see why not
So, do you think I should get a mullet or crewcut?
Admittedly, the mullet is a little dated and hasn’t aged very well. I would be more inclined to recommend a crew cut.
If I were to pick a mullet, what type of mullet should I get because my back hair is short buy not too short,
Sorry, I don’t know to be honest.
If you don’t know, it fine
Hi Charles,
do you maybe know what my face shape is I have the following measurements:
Forehead: 19 cm
Cheeck bones : 17 cm
Jawline : 20 cm
Facelenght: 21 cm
I was thinking like a mix of Square and heart form but im not sure.
Hi Roel,
That’s quite possible. Those measurements are quite close together so square is a good argument. Since square and heart face shapes are visibly quite different, you should be able to tell by looking in the mirror. It’s also possible for it to be round so you could have something between square and round.
Best,
CP
Hi Charles,
I am having trouble finding my fase shape.I think its square or triangle.
Forehead: 18 cm
Cheeck bones : 18 cm
Jawline : 20 cm
Facelenght: 20 cm
Here are my photos **link deleted**
Thank you.
Hi Vasilis,
I’d say it’s square!
All the best,
CP
I have kind of a hard time finding the exact way to measure my jaw for example, as just deciding the point where it starts at the very back of the jaw can add a few centimeters in either way. Same thing with cheek bones.
I am sort of unsure if I’m square, I always used to think I was when I was younger. Now I’m not so sure if maybe I’m oval or something. When I look back at old images from then my face looked a lot more square than now in my opinion, is it possible that just adding weight etc might have changed the look?
Measurments as I think they are atm, provided I measured correctly are about
Face length 20
Forehead width 14
Cheekbone width 13
Jawline 22

Hey Robin,
To answer your question, yes! your face shape can definitely change as the composition of your body changes, whether this occurs due to age or weight change, for example. As you mention, your face shape does seem different in those two images, though lighting and hair can play a role. From your latest picture, I’d say you’re closest to a diamond face shape: https://bespokeunit.com/face-shapes/diamond/
