You will realise early on that the oval face shape’s balanced proportions offer an ideal foundation for styling. The objective is to ensure that these proportions are respected without throwing them off. Nevertheless, they can be manipulated and adjusted to bring out any particular features. For instance, sharp hairstyles can render the face more angular if desired.
This guide for men provides an informative overview on how to style an oval face shape. You’ll learn all about the best haircuts, beards and moustaches as well as the ideal glasses frames too.
Each section can be found by scrolling down. However, you may jump directly to any particular subject:

Oval face shapes may find the following description familiar:
Your face length is longer than the cheekbone width as well as a forehead width larger than your jawline. It’s likely that both your chin and jawline aren’t pronounced and have a slight roundness to them.
Sound about right? If not, we explore a total of 7 face shapes. By identifying your face shape you may find that yours is different.
Nevertheless, not all the faces of any particular shape may look alike. Note that there’s a chance that you may feature characteristics that are reminiscent of other face shapes. Keep this in mind when following our face shape guides.
However, by aligning with a particular face shape, you’ll find that your personal grooming will improve by following certain guidelines.
Oval Face Shape Specifications
Above you will note the diagram that analyses the hallmarks of an Oval face shape. The face width gradually reduces from the forehead with a sloping jawline. With its even proportions, features are usually visible but not angular.
With balanced characteristics, this shape has been considered the so-called “ideal” face shape. Its neutral composition and lack of dominant features allow for a great versatility in styling from hairstyles to eye-wear.
Best Oval Face Shape Hairstyles
Being a well-proportioned structure, an oval face has the rare privilege to be free in experimenting a variety of styles. Nevertheless, a classic short back and sides with a little length on top is a foolproof solution. Whilst texture and volume on top sharpen the shape, discretion is advised with fringes, which run the risk of softening the features and making the face appear rounder.
DO:
- Wear hair off forehead to create volume and angles on top
DON’T:
- Avoid forward fringes

Best Oval Face Shape Beard Styles
With no structural or proportional weaknesses, men with oval shaped faces have the luxury to expriment with a wide variety of beard styles. That said, it’s important to respect the face’s proportions and avoid making it appear too round. Aim for angular finishes to bring out your features.

Best Oval Face Shape Moustache Styles
Oval face shapes can experiment with a variety of moustache styles but care should be taken that the moustache isn’t too long. Large, bushy moustaches that curl over the lip will reduce face height and make it appear round. Sharpened edges and angular finishes will overcome this and retain structure.

Best Glasses For Oval Face Shapes
As oval face shapes as the so-called “ideal”, they can be much easier to style. However, to ensure that your proportions stay well-balanced, there are certain steps to take. For instance, it would be a shame to lose harmony due to glasses that don’t work.
Indeed, oval face shapes have chameleon-like properties and their subtle features can be curbed or emphasised according to taste. Therefore, even more eccentric styles tend to work well. That said, try not to go for anything that well throw your proportions off entirely.
Balanced and classic styles are always safe choices. The most ideal options tend to be more angular styles as they will bring your features out. If you opt for anything too round, it may soften them or give your face a rounded appearance.
Finally, ensure that your glasses fit. Even if you’re oversizing, try not to go for anything that will dwarf your face and make it appear too small or round.

How about shirt collar styles for oval faced men?
Hi Lucre,
This is actually something that we intend to cover in the future!
However, you can rest assured that oval face shapes are pretty versatile when it comes to shirt collars. Try to avoid wide cutaways but aside from that, you should be fine with just about anything.
Best,
CP
Hi, can’t figure out my face shape. Maybe an expert could give me an idea? Thanks.
Face length: 8″
Cheekbones: 6.5″
Jawline: 9″
Forehead: 6.5″
Not sure if I would consider my jawline rounded or strong, not sure.
You could potentially be oval but your jawline is a little strong. It looks like you should actually be a triangle face shape. Did you measure from the mandible and not from just under the ear?
Best,
CP
Hello CP.
I would like to know if I have an oval face shape. I personally think it’s a mix of diamond and oval, what do you have to say.

Thank you for the attention,

Hi Ian,
Unfortunately, it looks like the Reddit account that posted that link has been deleted so the attached image has gone too.

Forehead= 6
Cheek=6.5
Jawline= 8 (4×2)
Length=8
I have a rounded forehead, high cheekbones, narrow jawline. But, my chin isn’t super pointy. Most ppl say oval. But, after measuring my face, the length of my face isnt 1.5 the width. My face is a tad bit to be a classic oval. Maybe I can just be heart shaped face thats slightly wider around the cheekbones?
Hi there,
This is possible, of course. Alternatively, you may have a face that features elements from different shapes. You can use several face shape guides and take the relevant information from them.
Best,
CP
According to my measurements what kind of face shape do you think I have?
Looks closer to triangle but it could certainly have square face shape elements.
Best,
CP

Hi Ian,
I recognise this photo. Didn’t you comment on our triangle face shape guide a few days ago under the name “Marcus”? I responded there!

Ok Full measurements
Face 7.64 in
Jawline 8.50 in

Some people say my head is oval shaped but I kinda think it’s oblong and a mix of oval my chin comes to a point my jawline is rounded I’m not too sure though I’m 6”1 not sure if it matters though.
Hi Lex,
Looks like your jawline indicates a triangle face shape. However, if visually people are saying egg-shaped, you’re probably closer to oblong.

CP
Hi,
Am I oval?

What is your advice if you have an oval face but naturally high but straight hairline / big forehead?
I also have very straight hair.
Any advice?
Hi John,
I’d recommend that you check out the heart or oblong face shape guides for tips regarding the forehead. These face shapes tend to have larger foreheads and there are a few comments you could pick up there. Heart face shapes are generally wider whereas oblong face shapes tend to be taller.
Best,
CP
Do you guys update new hairstyles?
Hi Dev,
We do occasionally add new hairstyles to the database. However, we focus mainly on broad hairstyles types as templates and then focus in on how they can be combined as well as the different variants in our existing guides.
All the best,
