One could use a phone, or simple quartz watch, to tell the time accurately with little hassle and maintenance cost – but where is the romance in that? In a world where everything is getting quicker, and many products are essentially disposable, some men are moving towards heritage brands like Benson & Clegg. This movement extends far beyond following brands and fads, to a deeper connection with our past and provenance.

Five Great Videos For “New” [& Old] Watch Guys

The Three Types Of Watch Movements

There are three types of watch movements: manual, automatic, and quartz. The first two are considered “mechanical.” This video does a really nice job in a short amount of time covering the difference between the three.

EXACTLY How A Mechanical Watch Works [MUST WATCH!]

This is by far the best explanation of exactly how a mechanical watch movement works. The video was produced by the Hamilton Watch Company, and it is quite simply fantastic! No more explanation needed…

If you only watch one of the five videos in this list, make it this one.

Hamilton Watch Company Factory – Simply Fine!

There are very few videos of modern watch factories that show what actually goes into making a watch, as so much is done by automated machines (or are trade secretes). This video is a window into the past, and shows how remarkable some of the tiny tolerances are that must be met to make an accurate timepiece. To think that people have been making watches now for centuries is quite amazing!

Run time: 21 mins (Note, some may want to skip to 4.52, but I quite enjoyed the introduction section to see the difference between then and today)

Masters Of Time – Modern Day Swiss Watchmakers

Documentary length video highlighting the true craftsmanship that is still alive today in making fine one-of-a-kind timepieces. These “cabniteers”  are shown working towards finishing pieces to be showcased at Basel World, which is the world’s largest watch show / convention held each year in Switzerland.

Omega – The Moon & James Bond

Omega is one of the world’s premier mechanical watch makers. It has an unbelievable heritage, and is one of the best brands to start with if one is looking to get involved in watch collecting [personally, I own four Omega’s – all from the 1950’s and 1960’s]. Their watches were the first on the moon, and it’s James Bond’s timepiece of choice. This video showcases their new co-axial movement, highlighting yet again the brand’s commitment to pushing watchmaking forward while being true to the past.
