If you live in Philadelphia or just visiting, I would highly recommend a visit to Fabric Row for a number of reasons:
- It’s got a cool older world vibe
- Wide selection of supplies you may need, such as: fabric, buttons, thread, etc…
- Affordable
- Knowledgeable staff
- Close to other main Philly attractions
At one time Philadelphia was a center of manufacturing for men’s clothes. This gave rise to the Fabric Row area that we know today.
Location Of Fabric Row
Fabric Row is located in the Queen Village area of Philadelphia, but most people will know that it’s just off South Street. Traditionally, it is said to be location on 4th Street between South & Catherine Street.
What To Expect On Fabric Row
In short, it’s the best place in Philadelphia to get all your supplies for making your own clothes, alterations, or crafts.
If you’re on this site you most likely have some interest in clothing and fashion, and it can always be good to get back to grass roots. Even if that is not making an outfit from scratch, but to at least get some inspiration (or a replacement button!).
You will find around 50 retailers, selling all manner of cloth and accessories. There are also custom tailor shops, and a few cool random bike shops.
My Favorite Place On Fabric Row
My favorite place is the “Pennsylvania Fabric Outlet” [Please note this location has no closed – Comment added: Jan 2nd 2017]. It has a great selection of fabric, and more importantly for me the best selection of buttons as I always seem to be changing them out on sports coats, etc…
Attractions Close To Fabric Row
South Street and all is charm is located adjacent to Fabric Row, where one can find all manner of things. To be fair it’s one of my favorite places to shop in the city, with all its random shops from sneaker stores, to independent vintage retailers…. Also as a bigger guy, their clothes selection seems to run bigger, over the H&M’s of the world.
Also, as Philly is such a small and walkable city, if it’s nice out I would recommend the walk down from Independence Hall area (15-25 mins). This will allow you to soak up some of that old and historic Philadelphia charm.
Final Review Of Fabric Row
If you have an interest in clothing, fashion, crafts, or just looking for something interesting to do, you could do a lot worse than a trip to Fabric Row.
