Review Of Magnifique Tailors Patong, Thailand
Located right off the beach in the downtown area, the Magnifique shopfront won’t ever be far away from where you’re staying as Patong itself is not overly large.
Initial Visit, Cloth Selection & Suit / Shirt Measurements
The shop is very spacious, bright and inviting.
There were lots of pre-made items waiting for customer collection which was a great way to see some of the options and quality of construction right off the bat.
Furthermore, it added to an overall great vibe because there was lots of foot traffic as people were coming and going even in the short time while were were in the shop.
I was especially impressed with the fully unlined options, as this is something very few tailors in the USA and UK offer and when they do it can be wild with respect to ultimate quality and price.
Note: most USA and UK custom tailors send your suit measurements to Asia to be constructed. There is nothing wrong with this, just worth commenting to showcase how buying in Asia cuts out this middle man in many cases.
The trick with an unlined jacket is always trading off the chest piece lining structure, and then the quality of the piping along the internal jacket seams. Certain guys can carry this unlined look, while others may be better suited to a 1/4 or 1/2 lined jacket. Lastly, as there is no lining by definition, these jackets tend to have a shorter life, but in the summer I think the trade off is worth the additional comfort in lightness and breathability.
Anyway, getting back to buying suits… Being a large shop, there were plenty of fabrics to choose from. I ended up selecting a couple of summer shirting options, so I could wear them on our trip, and a heavy tweed suiting fabric to wear when I got back to Philadelphia.
Trevor selected a light grey linen to be made into an unlined travel jacket. Something that was not too heavy or formal, but would look great over a t-shirt or dress short while travelling or even on a first date.
Nick [the owner] and his wife were in the shop the day we visited. Both were very accommodating, and as they had recently been to Philadelphia [my current hometown] on a tailoring trip we had plenty to talk about. They come to the USA and EU several times per year, and you can find their schedule on the website link at the end of this article.
The measuring process only took about 10-15 mines each.
Hospitality & Shop Mascots
As with all the other top 5 tailoring shops that made our list, the shop owners / staff / hosts all offered us drinks and Magnifique even had a couple of fury mascots to boot!
First Suit & Shirt Fitting
Only a few days later we returned to the shop for our first fitting.
My suit was quite off in both the arms, and the length. But that’s the reason for these fittings to get a “progress” report and alterations checklist. I’m a difficult chap to fit, as there is usually additional fabric in the chest area compared to a “standard / average” guy as my shoulders roll slightly forward, in addition to having a relatively small chest for my overall size.
On the other hand, Trevor’s jacket was almost spot on apart from some slimming required at the waist.
I personally thought Trevor should have stuck with the no sleeves “beater” look from above! No sleeves = no problems hombre…
Second Suit & Shirt Fittings
The second fitting came just a day later. This time the shirts and tweed jacket were much closer and I even got the first fitting for the jacket sleeves too.
Lots of attention was give to the arm holes and sleeve pitch. Again, this was due to my “irregularities”.
By this point all of our garments were very close and we only had to wait another day until their completion.
Final Fitting / Custom Suit & Shirt Collection
The final fit was good on me. I feel it was a touch boxy, but then again I am built like a fridge! So to be somewhat expected, but to be honest I did get some better fits from other tailors.
I was, however, very impressed with the finish quality of the 1/2 lined jacket I got.
On the other hand Trevor’s jacket fit perfectly. Although it may seem easy to dress someone of his stature, his particularly small waist compared to larger chest and even larger backside, make it quite difficult to maintain a classic and flattering silhouette.
This, on top of the fact that it’s a fully unlined and thus unstructured [via the use of canvas for example in the chest] jacket, is quite impressive.
Overall Thoughts Of The Process, People & Product
Magnifique had a great overall vibe. I especially liked the finishing quality of the unlined jackets.
I believe they make a nice cut suit for the slimmer younger guy, so highly recommended for the likes of Trevor above, whereas mine was a touch on the unshapely side [but I also understand I’m a large and very difficult shape to fit for].
This is, however, splitting hairs as all of our Top 5 Patong Phuket Custom Tailors were all fantastic people and provided great value for money.
Time & Number Of Fitting: From start to finish it took five days for us to get our suits made. It can, however, be as little as three days if you’re in a time crunch.
Service / People: Nick [the owner], his wife, and the other staff could not have been nicer.
Options Both Fabric & Design Points: Good overall selection.
Cost: The cost for the suit was right around $300 – 500 which was 100% inline with all the other Top 5 makers on our list. You’ll find some cheaper offers, but you ultimately get what you pay for…
Quality Of Finished Garment: Very high, especially the finishing work on the unlined jackets.
Total / Value For Money: Very good, highly recommended especially for the slimmer more contemporary fit guy.
