Why I Wanted Jodhpur Boots
Like many boot enthusiasts, I have a pretty wide collection that continues to grow as we explore new brands. However, there was something that was always missing.
As a kid, I was actually quite the horseman and would often wear Jodhpur boots with half-chaps rather than full-length riding boots. Overall, they tended to be more comfortable, easier to put on, and considerably less formal.
If you spend any time around horses, you quickly learn that Jodhpur boots are very versatile. Since they’re quite robust, you’ll often wear them when grooming the horses and mucking out the stables.
With the progressing years, I spent less time around horses. I still love them just as much as before and my sister even competes in national competitions. However, I don’t quite have the time nor the expenses that would allow me to commit to the hobby.
Nevertheless, my fondness for the Jodhpur boot didn’t wane and I really wanted a pair so I could enjoy its aesthetic and practical benefits. Outside of the equestrian world, there are few brands that produce them.
Therefore, I was delighted when I learned that Beckett Simonon offered an affordable yet high-quality pair.
Jodhpur Boot Style & Appearance
As mentioned earlier, the Jodhpur boot is usually quite casual and pretty sturdy. Generally, it’s a rustic boot that bridges the gap between the Wild West and rural England. Therefore, it’s not the sort of thing that you could typically wear with a suit and tie.
When I first discovered Beckett Simonon’s design, I was really impressed by how they had incorporated refined craftsmanship into the boot’s traditional country aesthetic. Unfortunately, Beckett Simonon is selective with the models that it puts on sale each month and I had to wait for when it became available.
When they did eventually activate its campaign, I was pretty excited and placed an order. By now, we’re quite used to Beckett Simonon’s production process so we’re used to the delay. However, I was in anxious anticipation!
Needless to say, the result was more than satisfactory and I was delighted to finally have a pair of my own!
Fit & Comfort
What I really love about Jodhpur boots is the single buckle strap that wraps around the boot and braces the ankle in place. It’s quite comfortable and keeps the warmth in during winter.
Usually, Beckett Simonon shoes tend to pinch me when they’re new. However, their boots are roomier and I was able to wear them with thick woollen socks from day 1. The insulation indeed quite welcome as I was wearing the boots on a cold November morning in London.
Meanwhile, the interior lining is made from wholecut vachette so there were no visible stitches that could cause any discomfort. By the end of the day, I had walked quite a number of miles and had spent most the time standing up but felt absolutely fine.
If you want a bit of extra comfort, Beckett Simonon also include foam inserts all of their shoes, which can come in handy. I personally don’t use them but I keep them just in case.
Dress Code & Formality
As I had mentioned previously, the Jodhpur boot is a rather rustic model of footwear. However, Beckett Simonon have done a wonderful job of gentrifying it.
It’s most striking detail is the buckle strap that I mentioned earlier. Not only is it practical but it adds a certain flair and visual interest to the design. Thanks to its slim design and fine cut, it’s quite elegant yet provides a hardy note to the boot’s design.
Indeed, this is exactly what I wanted so I would be able to benefit from the boot’s comfort as well as its style.
Traditionally, they’d still be regarded as somewhat casual but I fancied experimenting with my new boots. Therefore, I decided to wear them with my made-to-measure Indochino suit and a Islay Woollen Mill newsboy cap.
They looked right at home and the rustic facets of my attire brought the ensemble together quite nicely. Nevertheless, I added a camel overcoat from Hockerty that helped merge the tan leather into the whole tableaux.
Overall, the boots are very versatile, though. As you can see, they’re a daring and unconventional pairing with a suit. However, they bond wonderfully with chinos and jeans if you prefer something more casual.
Jodhpur Boots As A First Boot?
In our Jodhpur boot guide, we argued that it’s not an introductory boot style for someone who’s building a wardrobe. Yet, I would consider arguing otherwise, especially if you’re fond of boots.
Given that it’s a much rarer boot style, it presents an excellent alternative to more common designs. Most people will probably start with Chelsea boots or even traditional Blucher boots. Why not instead go for something that’s a little unique but equally versatile?
Perhaps it’s my association with mucking out cold stables in the fog, but I’m very fond of this boot style during the autumn season in particular. If you opt for a Bordeaux or tan colour, they look fantastic when walking through the fallen leaves.
Combined with tweed fabrics with hints of fleck or plaid, they look absolutely sensational and just ooze with the cosiness that we seek when things start to get chilly.
Given their Blake stitch construction, I’ll probably opt for something a little hardier for winter. However, I’ll probably reach for them again in the early spring!
Presentation & Value For Money
You can tell that Beckett Simonon are pride of their product just by the packaging. The boots are delivered in an understated black box with gold lettering. On the reverse of the lead is an information sheet breaking down the last and construction.
Meanwhile, the boots are shipped with shoe bags, the aforementioned inserts, and a booklet recounting the brand’s story.
As for the value for money, we never tire of saying that Beckett Simonon present an excellent investment. The boots retails for $229, which is already very cheap. However, you can get them cheaper when you use our exclusive 20% “BU20” code during checkout, which brings it down to just over $180.
Should you be looking to buy a new pair of boots, why don’t you consider a different style that breaks from the norm? I’m getting a lot of satisfaction from my Jodhpur boots and it makes a wonderful change for the usual designs that you see everyday.
Although there will be a waiting time when ordering from Beckett Simonon now, you can plan ahead to grab them for the late winter and early spring next year. If you enjoy tweeds as much as I do, I think that this will be a wonderful boot to integrate into your wardrobe and exude some equine vibes.
