Diplomático Rum from Venezuela has become a main staple in most people’s rum and spirits cabinet. Indeed, we have already reviewed several of its expressions. The Planas is aged up to six years but then filtered in order to make it an intriguing, complex, and well-aged white rum. Its name is derived from the valley and region where the rum is manufactured.
Diplomático Planas’ Robe
- Hue: White
- Clarity: Crisp
- Viscosity: Rich
The visual appearance of the Planas is perfectly clean, with a crisp, translucent white color. It offers a very thick, rich viscosity, thus the pearls on the side of the glass are running down very slowly.
Diplomático Planas’ Nose
- Notes: Coconut flakes, white pepper, light caramel
- Nosefeel: Prickly
The olfactory sensation at the beginning gives me a bit of an alcoholic tingle – obviously with 47% alcohol by volume, this has been taken up a notch from what one would normally expect with a standard white rum.
Right behind that, there’s a gorgeously crisp, coconut flake note with hints of freshly ground white pepper. Sprinkled on top, I sense freshly juiced Meyer lemon as well as caramel, even though very light ad bright.
Reminiscences of American white oak, vanilla cream, and custard are the building blocks of the nasal expression’s middle segment. The finish then offers fresh-cut green grass, hay, and an ever so slight tarragon herbaceousness.
In terms of the overall nosefeel: despite the prickly beginning, it’s soon fading into a more accessible and tamed character. There’s no alcohol burn, instead, the rum offers a warming sensation followed by a citrus prickliness.
Diplomático Planas’ Palate & Mouthfeel
- Primary Taste: Sweet
- Mouthfeel: Lively, prickly
- Opening: Vanilla, butterscotch, sugar cane
- Heart: Coconut, lovage, lemon zest
- Finish: Long [toffee, vanilla, overripe banana]
Luscious, creamy and velvety comes to mind immediately. The mouthfeel has plenty of sweetness that sits on the tongue with a thick and fat, almost oily initial impact.
The first flavor sensations reveal notes of vanilla, honeysuckle, butterscotch, and ample amounts of toffee. Towards the rear part of the palate, some of the coconut flakes, which I detected in the nose, make a comeback.
The same is true for those lively, green herbaceous nuances, elevating the entire experience by giving it a little bit of freshness and zing. Since the sweetness and caramel of the rum are quite prominent, the lively contrasts are not only pleasantly surprising but also important for the overall balance.
The finish is lingering, long, mellow, and soft. With its delicate and elegant nature, the Planas definitely lives up to its promise of being an aged sipping rum.
How To Drink Diplomático Planas
As a matter of fact: you can very easily drink this variation of Diplomático rum all by itself. Even though you do not need to mix it with any other fillers or fruit juices, it would definitely make for a delicious alternative as well.
Yes, sipping is a great way to enjoy Planas, but I thoroughly enjoy it mixed into a refreshing long drink with a generous pour of ginger beer.
Diplomático Planas Cocktail Suggestions
With its 47% alcohol by volume, this rum proudly stands up to all sorts of cocktails mixed with ice, sweet and sour modifiers. Hence, we can also suggest the following cocktails with Diplomático Planas:

Best Pairings With Diplomático Planas
When it comes to pairings, I initially tried some Cantuccini biscuits with it. The caramel sweetness, the creamy almond flavor, and a gentle vanilla cream go beautifully well with the Planas as a little finger food snack.
Hands down, this is a perfect cigar rum. My choice would be VegaFina’s 1998 line, which offers an overall smooth, harmonious, and balanced smoking experience. At the same time, it has a certain richness and depth to it, highlighted by woodiness and spice from the well-matured tobaccos and the oily, dark wrapper.
Overall Experience & Value For Money
The packaging is elegant and neat, with a distinct blue color and fine lines. It features the traditional Diplomático bottle, which is used for the other expressions of the brand as well, resulting in a cohesive portfolio. The natural cork gives the presentation a classy look and feel.
Overall, this rum is great value for money. Yes, it probably costs a bit more than other white rums in the pouring category but it is certainly a notch above – the quality of delivery and the experience are more complex and elevated.
Closing Thoughts
With its rather unique profile, Diplomático Planas is an interesting interpretation of the often uninspired white rum category – medium-plus in terms of complexity and just a great overall rum. Whether you use it as a base for your preferred cocktails and long drinks, or pour it neat as a delicious treat all by itself, this rum will not disappoint at all.
"A very versatile rum that will elevate your rum cocktails but also delivers a smooth and elegant sipping experience all by itself.."
