As my full beard approached the 4-month mark, it was become so voluminous that I started to look at options for trimming and keeping it in check. For instance, the cheek line needed daily touching up and I wanted something to make this easy.
Having recently discovered shavettes, I found that this would be an ideal device for touch ups. Shavettes are actually like straight razors except that the blades are disposable. This means that you don’t have to worry about stropping or honing and can just replace the blades when they dull.
Therefore, I headed online and purchased the Equinox Shavette in order to try it out. However, I eventually shaved my beard off entirely. This actually made it perfect for writing up a full review of the Equinox Matte Black Shavette.
Overview Of the Equinox Shavette
- Brand: Equinox
- Material: Stainless Steel
- Weight: 70 g (2.45 Oz)
- Mechanism: Clasp
- Included Blades: 100 Derby Premium Single Edge Blades
- Price: $12.50 [Buy Now On Amazon]
This first thing that I noticed is that although the shavette is light compared to a straight razor, it’s still surprisingly weighty. On the scales, they measured at 70 g (2.45 Oz) without the blade. I was interested to see how this would hold up against the more traditional option.
Furthermore, I loved the matte black finish. It looks absolutely great and is very eye-catching. This is also perfect if you’re prone to leaving your razors in the bathroom as the coating protects the stainless steel body from rust.
My only issue with this finish was that it picked up finger marks really easily. However, this isn’t a big deal overall.
Derby Premium Razor Blades
Another great addition is that the Equinox is actually supplied with razors to begin with. This is fantastic for beginners as it’s often hard to know which are the best razor blades when starting out.
In fact, the blades provided were Derby Premiums, which are single-bladed rather than double-bladed. As most razor blades are double-edged to accommodate for conventional safety blades, this was a huge plus.
Usually, you have to snip them in two before you can insert them into a shavette. Here, I didn’t have to do this, which is very convenient. Moreover, the razor actually came with a whopping 50 blades so that will keep me going for a while.
I also found that the blades were of excellent quality and featured a type of wax or oil to help them fit securely into the clasp. A nice overall touch.
Shaving Experience
Initially, I used this razor for regular touch-ups and found them to be very convenient. Unlike straight razors, the cutting edge is much shorter, which means they’re ideal for small spots. Similarly, safety razors have bulky heads, which makes it hard to see what you’re doing.
The overall experience was smooth and easy and I was very happy with the results. However, after a little refresher using our guide to shaving with a straight razor, I decided to give this a proper use.
During the course of the shave, I found that the razor was surprisingly forgiving for a shavette. As our introduction to shavettes indicates, they can be very aggressive and quite lethal when you have limit experience.
Nevertheless, I was impressed by the smoothness and notice only desirable tactile feedback rather than vibrations. With shavettes and razors in general, vibrations are an undesirable effect, which can cause irritation.
Final Verdict
I really enjoyed using the Equinox. Furthermore, I’m fond of its streamlined design and the way it’s cut from 100% stainless steel with a classy stamped logo down the sides.
While it’s by no means as prestigious as an authentic straight razor or premium safety razor, it gave a very smooth shave for sure. At only $12.99 on Amazon including the 50 Derby premium blades, the Equinox offers outstanding value for money.
In fact, I like this shavette so much we’ve featured it as the best shavette that you can buy online!

“A premium feel at a cut-throat price”….what a line when reviewing razors. But an interesting review of what appears to be a great product
Hi Chas (or should I say “dad”?)!
Yes, Paul’s wit as is sharp as the razor’s cutting edge!
After reading such a spectacular review, are you sure you don’t want to give it a try?
Best,
CP
I just picked one up on the Amazon link above for $10.49.
I already have one, but ordered two more for travel and locker at work.
Unbeatable price with the 100 blades included.
Dear Joe,
Good choice. I can’t agree more re value for money.
I have two myself!
Cheers – Paul
