Overview Of The Rabbit Air SPA-780A
The specific MinusA2 unit I’m using is the model number SPA-780A. There are other versions, such as the SPA-700A, which are similar in look but different in spec. For instance, my SPA-780A is rated to cover 815 sq. ft. while the SPA-700A is only rated for 700 sq. ft. There’s also the SPA-780N which is wifi-enabled so you can control it via an app.
The Rabbit Air MinusA2 uses a 6-stage air filtration system that includes a HEPA filter and an activated charcoal component that deals with residual odors. For any of these units, you have a couple of different options as to what air particles you want to target. While I ordered mine with the Odor Remover Filter which is intended for tobacco smoke, there are other options labeled for Germ Defense, Pet Allergens, and Toxin Absorption.
In spite of the numerous layers of filtration, the unit is just 7″ deep so it’s by no means bulky. That being said, the 21.4″ by 20″ broad side of the MinusA2 means you’re not going to be able to hide it, nor would you want to, as it should be exposed so that it’s able to circulate the air in the room. Additionally, I think the unit has a rather sleek design even without the Water Lilies version I have here, so it’s a nice high-tech addition to any cigar-smoking space.
Size & Weight
The Rabbit Air MinusA2 isn’t particularly small nor is it oversized. As far as weight, it’s around 20 lbs so it’d be relatively easy to move it with one hand around a room. The rear of the unit also has a sort of handle that helps to get a good grip on it.
If you’re moving the unit from room to room or if you plan on mounting it on a wall, you should keep in mind that the top-rear of the unit has the exhaust so this area should be clear to freely expel the purified air. I also find it works best to have the unit on a higher plane given that cigar smoke tends to rise to the top of a room.
Using The Rabbit Air MinusA2
Turning on this Rabbit Air MinusA2 is as simple as turning on your TV; this is thanks to the remote control that comes with the unit. Aside from the power button, the controller includes buttons for the fan speed, ambient lighting & more.
These same buttons are also present on the front of the unit itself, however, it is much easier to use the remote if you happen to have the unit mounted on a wall.
Once the unit is on, you’ll notice the small round light on the front will be blue. If there is already smoke in the air when you turn it on, the fans will boot up and the blue light will turn red as this is the unit’s way of indicating that there are undesired particles in the air. Basically, the red light indicates the unit is actively cleaning the air that it is taking in.
This Rabbit Air MinusA2 will automatically detect the number of particles in the surrounding air and turn up the power to deal with them accordingly. That being said, you can turn up the fan setting yourself if you’d like the unit to go into the Turbo setting when it doesn’t automatically deem it necessary.
Even at the High setting of the fan, the unit remains rather quiet. In my review video above, you can certainly hear the humming of the unit as I’m speaking yet it is not loud whatsoever and I did not have to raise my voice for it to be heard clearly through the microphone. Off-camera, I had no issues having a normal conversation with fellow smokers in my man cave while we were smoking and the MinusA2 was doing its thing.
Accessing The MinusA2’s Air Purifying Unit
To access the 6-stage filter of the MinusA2, you simply have to pull off the front Water Lilies cover that is held on with magnets. After that, the filter itself can be just as easily removed with the attached tabs on either side.
If you’re taking apart the filtration unit, it’s critical to ensure that you put it back together in the same order. Fortunately, the back of the cover has a helpful diagram with pictures that reflect how the individual layers should be arranged.
Does The Rabbit Air MinusA2 Work?
Broadly speaking, the MinusA2 is definitely effective in cleaning the air from cigar smoke and residual odors. However, there is a slight caveat here.
As I touched on above, if you’re using this unit in an enclosed space, you want to ensure that it’s sitting on a higher plane where it can directly intake the cigar smoke. Ideally, you’d mount it on the wall to achieve this and also to get it out of the way so that you or your guests aren’t concerned with knocking it over when moving around. It’s worth noting that the unit does include the necessary parts for hanging it on a wall.
Additionally, you should consider how often you smoke and/or how often you’ll have multiple smokers in the room. For example, I invited four friends over to enjoy a couple of stogies and the MinusA2 was no match for our output. If you tend to have numerous smokers in the space, consider purchasing a couple of units or perhaps a larger unit. YourElegantBar has a number of heavy smoke units that you can check out here.
Lastly, and as a general rule, I recommend cleaning up any cigar paraphernalia that may cause residual odors to persist. I’ll usually clean out any ashtrays and manually set the unit to continue running through the night and into the next day.
By default, the unit’s Auto mode will power down or turn off if the lights in the room are turned off so if you’re hoping for it to continue working overtime to clean the air in the room, you’ll have to set this manually.
Pros & Cons Of The MinusA2
Here’s my quick hit list of what I found to be the advantages and disadvantages of the Rabbit Air MinusA2
Pros
- The design of the unit is fantastic. Not only does it look attractive but it’s also quite shallow so it’s easy to mount on a wall.
- The Rabbit Air MinusA2 comes with a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty that is quite reassuring.
- The filters are indicated to last 2 years with 12 hours of daily runtime which I find to be very generous.
- The unit is very quiet and while noticeable, it is easily covered up by normal conversation or a TV.
- The ambient lighting option is a nice touch.
- The remote is very useful if you don’t have the wifi-enabled version.
Cons
- The greatest disadvantage I found is that one has to know what to expect from the unit. If you’re a very regular smoker or commonly have guests over to enjoy a few cigars, you’ll have to consider a more powerful unit or give the MinusA2 some time to be able to remove all residual odors from your cigar space.
- With a price point starting at $550, this can be hard to access for some. Depending on where you’re located and the weather, you could open the windows in your space to allow the natural air to circulate in and carry away some of the residual odors.
Final Thoughts
To conclude, I definitely recommend the Rabbit Air MinusA2 for any cigar aficionado looking for a smoke purifying solution for their cigar space if they’re able to afford it.
As highlighted, one should keep the limitations of the unit in mind. If you’re smoking a couple of times a week in an enclosed space, then the MinusA2 is a great option. However, if you smoke cigars more regularly (whether by yourself or with friends), then a higher-powered option may be more in line with your needs.
Either way, I can always recommend the team at YourElegantBar who provided this MinusA2 for review. In my previous experience with them, where I purchased a Remington Cigar Cabinet, they offered great customer service and were very helpful when I had an issue with my cabinet.
"The MinusA2 is effective at removing cigar odors and is a fantastic air-purifying solution for most smoker's cigar space. "
