Made in collaboration with Italian designer and craftsman Marcello Bottino, Davidoff releases new numbered limited edition travel humidors in this style on a yearly basis.
The model featured in this review was inspired by Winston Churchill’s reputation for adventure much like Davidoff’s limited edition Winston Churchill The Traveller cigar.
Davidoff Travel Humidor Design & Construction
Davidoff’s travel humidors are crafted from naturally lightweight leather and grey camel hair felt with a subtle blue windowpane pattern. Its overall design is reminiscent of a small satchel with a front flap that folds over a simple pouch.
On the inside on the flap, there are also two small pockets, ideal for both a cutter and a lighter as well as other small trinkets.
In terms of presentation, the travel humidor is aesthetically stunning. Indeed, its premium design and materials are a refreshing change from the usual utilitarian options by the likes of Cigar Caddy or Herf-a-Dor.
The aforementioned pouch is sealed using a single magnetic clasp placed where the flap folds over, which efficiently retains moisture inside. On older models like this Winston Churchill limited edition, the opening is found at the end of flap.
Meanwhile, newer releases feature the opening slightly lower down on the inside of the flap. This new approach is arguably more practical and easier for accessing the cigars inside.
As for the cigars, they are cradled by a weave-design cigar safe that resembles a tray. With its integrated lateral bars, the foam folds in a weave shape that securely locks the cigars in place.
Using a small tab on its end, the tray is simply pulled out of the flap through the opening. You can then happily add or remove the cigars from the tray.
Conversely, if you have an older model, you’ll notice that this is somewhat awkward without being able to place the satchel on a surface.
However, newer versions are much easier to handle when standing up without having anything for support.
Supplied With Boveda
Finally, all Davidoff travel humidors used to be supplied with Davidoff-branded HF Jelly humidipacks, which were somewhat unreliable.
However, they are now equipped with Boveda humidity packs that is elegantly sealed in an enevelope.
If you’ve already read some of our cigar content, you’ll see that we’re advocates of Boveda. We believe that their humidity packs offer the best possible performance, especially when travelling.
This is largely thanks to their two-way membrane, which absorbs excess moisture while diffusing it when more is required.
Furthermore, their packs are designed to evenly distribute the humidity throughout the container. This helps to create a balanced biosphere and prevents the cigars closest to the pack from being exposed to excessive levels of moisture.
Travel Humidor Functionality
Indeed, Davidoff’s creation is particularly large for a travel humidor – especially so given that it only stores 8 cigars.
Similarly, it is arguably cumbersome and can’t be easily slipped in a bag or briefcase. As a result, it often has to be carried separately under the arm like a folio.
Additionally, the humidor can only store up to 8 cigars despite its large size. While you’ll likely be able to easily fill the tray with most cigar sizes, unusually large vitolas may take the space of two cigars.
However, Davidoff’s travel humidor is not designed to be practical. In fact, those that criticise these inconveniences as shortcomings may have missed the point of its conception.
Rather than being a simply container designed for efficiency, the travel humidor is a fine statement of craftsmanship. It is less of practical storage solution and more of a fashion accessory that’s made to be noticed and acknowledged.
After all, functional, no-nonsense travel humidors are very commonplace. Meanwhile, those looking for elegant alternatives may often be dismayed by the majority of leather-bound travel humidors as they tend to be somewhat underwhelming in terms of quality.
Therefore, Davidoff instead offers an elegant and premium alternative that provides you with the opportunity to carry your cigars in style. The objective isn’t to be practical and understated but to display your passion of cigars instead.
As mentioned above, the humidor offers competent protection for your cigars and provides an excellent air-tight seal. In fact, both Paul and I found that our Boveda packs easily lasted several months in the humidor, which is far superior to most affordable alternatives.
Davidoff Travel Humidor Value For Money
As mentioned above, Davidoff offers a stylish alternative to typical travel humidors that you can buy online.
If you’re looking for an affordable and practical solution for transporting cigars, you’d likely be better buying either a Boveda humidor bag or a Cigar Caddy for $15 and $24 respectively.
However, if it instead fulfils the need for an elegant humidor for special occasions, then it might be just the solution that you seek!
Bear in mind, though, that it is indeed a premium product. Each model is a limited edition and sold in numbered quantities of 400 editions.
Depending on the model that you choose, Davidoff’s travel humidors retail between $320 and $350 on their official site.
Nevertheless, we would certainly not recommend this humidor as your only storage solution for travelling. We would suggest first buying a more affordable and rugged option for everyday use. If you want to see the best ones to buy, check out our dedicated travel humidor guide.
That said, it’s a great option to have on-hand when heading to formal events or wanting to add a little flair as you head out into town! If you’re a true cigar enthusiast who enjoys relishing in luxury products to display his or her passion, then we believe that Davidoff’s travel humidor offers excellent value.
Closing Thoughts
As we often say in both our cigar storage videos and detailed guides, what is considered the best humidor isn’t objective. Instead, it depends on your needs and finding the solution best adapted to them.
Davidoff’s travel humidor is an expertly crafted statement to quality craftsmanship. Furthermore, it’s a luxury accessory ideal for the proud cigar enthusiast.
Indeed, it may be bulky and not provide the same storage capacity as smaller travel humidors. Nevertheless, it offers excellent performance with an air-tight seal and sufficient protection for you cigars.
If this is a cigar humidor that corresponds to your needs, then we couldn’t recommend it highly enough. It’s a great conversation starter and looks stunning even when kept in a shelf between usage.
